Here is a new car from VW. 282mpg, and is supposed to go into production in 2010.

Kinda reminds me of the "car" version of the light cycles from the movie Tron.

Yes, but then it was an idea they were playing with, what's new is that they are actually putting the thing into production.

With the price of gas now and I can't imagine what they will be like in 2 years, I might seriously be in the market for a car that gets 235 mpg. I will have to trade my GTI in for one of those I will take an additional 210 mpg.

So was the Honda Insight; who cares. I think the Prius is ugly too. That said, we better all get used to it. Vehicles such as this are the future. The days of "cheap" & unlimited gas/fuel are long gone. Take a look at the developing world (India, CHina etc) more people all vying for the same energy.

Depending on intitial cost, for basic transportation (to/from work, errands, etc) I'd drive pretty much any "ugly" car that got that kind of mileage. I'd still have my VWs and my truck for when I want or need 'em, but for basic every day...

Just because a vehicle has to be fuel efficient doesn't mean it has to look like a suppository.

No, actually it has to look that way, or similiar, to be fuel effecient.

Low weight only gets you so far in the quest for ultimate fuel economy; aerodynamics plays a big role. The One-Liter is long and low, coming in at 11.4 feet long, 4.1 feet wide and 3.3 feet tall. It features an aircraft-like canopy, flat wheel covers and a belly pan to smooth the airflow under the car. The engine cooling vents open only when needed, and video cameras take the place of mirrors. The passenger sits behind the driver to keep the car narrow. The car has a coefficient of drag of 0.16; the average car comes in around 0.30 and the Honda Insight had a Cd of 0.25.

I wonder what the drag coefficient of a splittie is? Confused

I'm sure car makers will take ideas/designs like this and attempt to incorporate them into nicer "looking" vehicles. This is obviously the extreme.
