I'm considering buying a new timing light....one with the digital advance, tach and dwell capabilities.

I know that I could use this light on a 6 volt engine by powering the light from a separate 12 volt source. My question is, will doing so only permit use of the strobe light? Or would I also be able to use the other functions in a 6 volt environment?

Thanks, and sorry about the noob question....

You only power it off the 12 volt. The tach signal still comes from the 6v coil. You should be fine using it as it is intended.

So the new style lights would have how many connections?

I assume a positive for power, a ground, an induction pick-up for the spark plug....

Do they have a separate wire that goes to the coil? I've not yet used one....

Mailman
a lot of the new timing lights are self powered so you don't need a 12v power source, you just hook them to #1 spark plug or # 8 on a IHC V8.

Doh! You got me there... inductive pickup for spark plug wire, not coil.
