Somebody was kind enough to post them last fall. I wrote them down and put them in a special place so I could make an accurate stick. Now I can't find that special place.

I was hoping maybe someone who had one could post them up again.

This should really be in the accessories forum.

The early sticks are anodized aluminum in the colors, red, blue, and black. They are engraved.....(not etched) with a VW in a circle three inches from the top. This is followed by a unmarked engraved line, then corresponding engraved lines marked 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, R, 5. The unmarked line would have been marked 50 if VW had chosen to designate it, but they didn't. These early sticks are VERY rare. When the tank changed, VW continued with the sticks in aluminum, but they were not etched, but rather painted with a silver paint for the lines................but this time in just the colors blue and black with the first line beginning the measurement. (Some collectors say the red was also continued, but I personally, have not seen any in this later style, and am a bit skeptical.)

Wood sticks were given away by dealers and used as advertising with the name and number of the dealership. These are also very collectible but are considerably less expensive. An early Red.....engraved aluminum gas stick, is the "holy grail" with blue next, followed by black. An aluminum stick is subject to being reproduced, especially the later painted ones, but even those are somewhat difficult to fake due to the "silver" used by the factory. Once you have seen a real stick, it is easy to see the differences; much like any early accessory................certain details cannot be reproduced easily.

I'm just looking for the measurements so I can make my own non-original stick for personal use.

What I'm looking for is how far the lines are from the end of the stick.

A while back, they were posted in another thread so they could be easily copied. I made a copy on paper, but it has gotten lost.

I just figured maybe someone cold post the measurements and save me from having to drain the tank and pour in a gallon at a time to calibrate my stick.

I get what you mean........... Wink

The pre '55 stick is 15 and a half inches long. The first line from the bottom (5) is one and a quarter inches up. The "R" line is one half inch higher. The 10 line is three inches from the bottom. Here it gets tricky...so I'll use centimeters. The 15 line is 11 centimeters from the bottom. The 20 line is 13.8 cm from the bottom. The 25 line is 16.3 cm from the bottom. The 30 line is 18.5 cm from the bottom. The 40 line 23.5 cm from the bottom. The next (unmarked) line is 11 inches or 28.25 cm from the bottom. I hope that helps. I don't have a '55 or later stick measurements, but these should give you a relative scale to work with.
BTW...............you will see several different fuel sticks that have a scale for VW tanks on them. The VW engraved ones are the ones that command the high prices.

I've never seen one like this example, which might explain why it's been for sale for almost 2 years

I'd say the $225 price tag has more to do with it being for sale that long then anything else. This one looks like something a local dealer would have supplied.

53 0val, thats what I'm looking for. You Da Man! This will work to make a stick for my 50.

Now if anybody has measurements for a post 55 stick.....

The gallons measurments are at odd increments as the stick uses the liter system in increments of 5 liters and the lines line up for both sides of the stick.

Overall length is 14 15/16 inches.

5l/1.3 g= 1 3/4 in.

R = 2 7/16 in.

10l/2.6g= 3 9/16 in.

15l/3.9g= 4 5/16in.

20l/5.2g= 5 1/4 in.

25l/6.9g= 6 1/8 in.

30l/7.9g= 8 1/2 in.

35l/9.2g= 8 13/16in.

40l/ 10.5g= 10 13/16 in.

I really enjoy hand cranking my 36 hp bus for show and since I cannot do that with my 1960 beetle I use my fuel stick at every fill up. I get lot's of stares but only a few question me...

I'm currently using an unmarked stick on the 55. Since I don't drive it everyday, I never know for sure how much fuel is in the tank. So I usually give it a dip before heading out for any type of ride that will take me away from home.

I just wanted to be able to know a little better how much is in the tank.

Well it depends, I use the stick before and after filling up. If I have not driven the bug in awhile and have forgotten when I filled up last which happens a lot with a 36 horse; then I use the stick as a pretty accurate guide. I do not consider it an accessory..
