I have read the threads on this problem and still I can't remove the right rear drum off my 66 Westy.

I soaked it with Kroli, I loosened the castle nut and drove it around hoping to brake it loose, I backed off the shoes, I used a sledge to break it loose, I used a torch and got it cherry red and used a heavy duty 3 arm puller and still it is stuck. With help from a friend we used his ultra heavy duty puller and still no go, even began to bend the 3/4 inch plate. I have come to point where I have to cut the drum off. Some say cut it off, others say don't.

Any help is appreciated, I am readying my Makita with cut off blade for the impending drum surgery!! Any suggestions??

Soak the drum with brake fluid and let it sit for a day. Repeat 2 or 3 times. Then hit it with a torch and see if you can break it loose.

Thanks Mike, I will do that. Also a friend suggested also to use a jack hammer to vibrate it loose. He had the same problem and an old timer mechanic did this and voila it came off. We'll see!! I will hold off on the Makita for now.

If all else fails, go down to your local Rental Store and rent a drum puller. Make sure to rent the five lug type and not the three lug type.

Well I finally got it off!! Very Happy I used PB Blaster and let it soak, then I used a Bosch 60 lb jack hammer to rattle it loose at the stub axle and finally my 3 arm drum puller. I slammed on it for 1 hr and 15 minutes before I got the drum off. What a PITA!!

So the jack hammer was the trick and PB Blaster is some good stuff, think I'll PB Blast my SO-42 table leg and see what happens. I was dissapointed with the performance of Kroil, expensive too.

I've read that loosening the nut, reinstall the cotter pin (nut still loose) and driving around the block will loosen a stuck drum.

Absolutely amazing and true. I worked on this impossibly stuck drum and nearly broke my 3 leg puller. This is the only drum I've failed at getting off, even Ronnie chickened out, likely not wanting to mar his 100+ to 100+ drum pull ratio. Only the seals are getting replaced as the RGB seems ok, despite the outer bearing definately getting hot as hell.

The spacer behind the drum was also impossibly stuck, so today Joe heated it generously, and it ultimately proved welded on the stub axle too, as no amount of careful, then abusive methods could loosen it. Soooo, we resorted to very carefully spinning a thin wiz wheel helically through the top 80-90% depth of the spacer, then splitting the spacer at that cut with a cold chisle.

Yeah, I'm thinking about the carnage of the accident when the stub axle breaks because it was heated to high hell too, but I've never heard of a 46mm stub axle breaking. Have any of you guys heard of a 46mm stub axle breaking under normal conditions either? That this one likely has lost some of it's strenghth from being heated, let's just pay attention to the reliability of if over time.
