I was trying to replace the fuel pump flange that goes into the Engine block and a little piece (1/2" or so) broke off and fell inside. The crank and everything turns fine, - should I be worried?

I figured it will just grind up and I can change the oil after a few km's or so since its only plastic. If it was a nut or bolt I would obviously have to split the case.

Thanks!

Does the engine have an oil filter? If not, you better get it out of there for sure. You can probably find it with a coat hanger or something after you drain the oil.

If I pull the oil pump, wont I just be staring at the Cam gear or is there going to be more room to fish around for the piece?

Well when you look at case the cam gear is blocked away from the crankcase, if you got rude with that piece it might be down below but if not itll be behind the pump, by the way its called rynlite Very Happy Very Happy

Thanks Bill, under further inspection and the help of a flashlight I can see the little bastard on the other side of the oil pump. It just sitting on the ledge under the dizzy gear. I cant reach it for the life of me, tried coat hangers and screwdrivers, etc. Can I pull the dizzy gear out with little hassle or does more stuff have potential to fall in? I've never taken out the dizzy gear with the case together.

I think pulling the drive out will give me access to that little bastard. I'm just worried about these shims you speak off. I may be better to just grind up that piece and leave the drive be. I'll give it some thought...

The motor is from a 73 beetle, 1600cc dual port.

If you can see it, get some of those claw grabbers and fish it down there and try to get it that way.
