thanks, but only need one. i even have an over-priced mint '69 bay clock i would swap for one!
if you think the locks are hard to find, what about the escutcheon plate around it - the trim that mounts on the outside of the door around the key plunger.
i've never seen one and have no idea what they even look like! |
I have 68 single cab. The locks for the treasure chest look to be identical to the 26L 086 locks. It looks like the PO tried to drill out the lock mechanism and it theycan only be opened with a screw driver. Is there any way these mechanisms can be repaired or replaced so they can be opened with a key? |

Has chrome '68 emblems been discussed? I think sometime after '68 they went stainless. Here is a nice '68 chrome emblem, on an original patina'd Bus, I assume original to this Bus.

Are the drums on a 68 one year only? Someone said this and I hadn't heard that before. That could be a real issue as those need to be replaced on a semi-regular basis (mine are good right now). Also, anyone have a photo of the side plate of a 68 transmission with the acorn nuts. Just curious if mine is the original. |
Yes, '68 rear drums are part number 211.501.615F.... G would be '69-'70 |
So that would make the backing plates different too? |
Posting as I read through thread just looked at my drums on my newly purchased Jan 68 single cab got the F part number in them and single lip backing plates _________________

I might have found another oddity, the CV joints have a cap on the inner side of the joint & the joint has a relief machined into it to accommodate the cap.

looking at another thread looks like they were a 68 only part to stop dilution of the cv joint grease if the seal in the gearbox went _________________

I have heard of the caps on early '69 buses as well.
Interesting thought on the output seal theory. I would like to know who else had them just on the inner joint.

1968 Aftermarket Brake Fluid Fill Reservoir Installation
Trashman wrote: |
Long needed fix went down today. A lot of you guys know, especially you 68 owners, that the upper brake fluid reservoir on a 68 is a one year only part. And if you know that, you might also know that this part isn't reproduced, until just recently. Cip1 sells a replacement 68 only brake fluid reservoir and I finally ordered one this past week and got it on today. Here are some pics of my old one compared to the new one. As you can see, my old one is all cracked and has a huge hole in it. Safe to say it wasn't holding any fluid and there isn't any amount of jb weld that could have change that.
The new one looked great upon initial inspection, but when I went to go switch the old one out for it it wouldn't fit over the metal tube. I noticed that the opening wasn't round like the original, so I did a little bit of trimming to fix that and it slid right on and the old threads on the locking collar matched up with the new ones on the reservoir no problem. Happy camper with this one! |

091 is listed as “whitewall tires” in the split bus m-code listing. Could very well be the same as the radio code, the 425 and a bunch of other ones are unchanged between split busses and bays... _________________ Also, vanagons! |

Good call on the whitewalls. I wonder if the tires on it now are OG. It makes sense that a couple of split codes could have held over on the transition year.
If not whitewalls, maybe it is a fat fingered M092 - Lower rear end gearing for mountain driving? |

easy way to find that out is to get under the bus and have a look at the gearbox code. But i doubt it, don't see VW making many mistakes in their M-plate codes.. _________________ Also, vanagons! |

I would think that too, but there are a couple VIN mistakes on the forum. |
