I have seen many Yakama bars for sale but I am not sure what one is correct to fit the vanagon. Does anyone have a suggestion about length or other information that can help me in my search? |

You need the 1A towers and (unfortunately) the high rise kit. The roof is arched enough that you need the extra clearance, but the 3.5" spacers are way too tall....
After 15 years, I grew tired of the taller risers, and chopped them down to 1.5", painted them, and found a shorter bolt.
I also cleaned them up, and cut (I had 66" bars) about 3" of rusty ends off each bar and bought new end caps. Should be good for another 15...

|
|
Hello all.
Okay, I am new to the Samba and have been using the search and reading all the roof rack threads 'till I am crosseyed and confused.
Problem is this...I want to haul my canoe on my new 85 westy, which I will pick up in about two weeks.. It will of course be my baby and will live in the garage when not on the road. There is only one inch of clearance as she enters the garage door opening.
I want to buy a roof rack that is attached to the rain gutters, so I can remove it to park in the garage.
I do not want to drill into the pop top for artificial rain gutters. This baby is totally stock and I want to keep her that way.
I don't care about raising the pop top without having to remove the rack.
Question is this will the 1A yakima towers with the brakets that attach to the rain gutters, give me enough clearance over the pop top or must I be wed to the artificial rain gutters?
Thanks for any input...

If you are convinced you do not wish to drill holes in the pop-top, these are what you need. I used them for a couple of years, but got really tired of having to unload the cargo box to pop up the top.
They are Thule, and do remove quickly to pull into the garage.
My current setup is described in this thread.

Thank you. That is what I wanted to see.
I thought I read somewhere that the Thule rack would not clear the pop top, but your picture is worth a thousand words.
Is your Kelty a medium or large? Been looking at the Bus Depot special on the Keltys but not sure about the size. Do you like yours??? |

It is the medium Kelty awning, and it does serve its Spartan purpose. I picked it up in Cheyenne at Sierra Trading Post for about $60.
Other, pricier awnings are far more luxuriant. Try using the search for that.
Cheers,
Ric
*Edit* I just checked BusDepot's site, and the medium Kelty Carport they have is far more deluxe than the one I got from STP.

My pleasure!
I'd like to make it to the Fasching celebration in G-J next year. I understand it is a pretty silly time.
And it involves beer. Go figure.

You get here, look me up. GJ is a beautiful place. Moved here from Phoenix 2 years ago. Before that, I was an east coast boy born and raised in Baltimore. In between spent three years in Japan.

Be aware that there are three versions of the Thule gutter mounts: regular, high, and super-high. You probably want the super-high if you're mounting to the gutters. |

Thanks for the tip. I did check them out today and the super high are the ones I researched.

I have several sets of both Yakima 1A w High rise kit (brand new) and Thule 953 Super High Rise foot pack, along with crossbars and lock packs, if anyone needs them. I may also have the Thule medium high rise foot pack also.
I have been fitting and trading friends' roof racks for years, and have ended up with lots of extra gear, some of it brand new in box.

To carry your canoe only with the rack if you're not drilling the poptop, you can spread out the bars as far as you want and place one over the back edge of the front luggage rack. Then you only need to remove the rear crossbar to pop the top. There are also several brands of van racks that will work in this configuration as well and are generally cheaper. You can search the internet for van cargo racks.

If anyone has recently gone the route of chopping your high rise kit in half I'm very interested in the other half.
Fighting with the idea of buying a set new but if someones got some kicking about I'm interested. |
