I looked in the threads for info but nothing mentioned.
Does anybody know where to buy a new door gasket for a SO-42 ice box? Thanks! |

mine it's not SO42 but early bay... I thing gasket it's the same...
To me it looks like a common fridge gasket, the one that carries a magnet inside for a better closing. In spain there are places that you can buy it in lenght... cut it at 45 angle and glue each angle... _________________ 1967 Split SO-42 Dormobile |

A couple years ago I looked into this. Here in the US there are some places online that sell gaskets for vintage refrigerators. I was unable to find one that came close to matching the profile of the door seal on the westy iceboxes.
If anyone finds something correct, it would be great to know about it. Mine is kind of brittle but is still functional. I would like to replace it at some point. |

Im looking for this stuff....it sure seems ellusive.
I may have to use a substitute profile like #6662 from this place:

Update: That gasket did not fit so well..... I'm still trying to figure out a way to make it work. I'm trying to source a better profile match, so far - no dice. _________________

Man, the moment someone discovers a supplier of the correct seal for the SO-42 ice box door, a whole lot of us will be shopping for some, and mine is in good shape! I'd still buy some as a back-up!

Yes, to be specific. The #6662 rides too far outside of the plastic door liner material. This interferes with the door opening and closing. I considered shaving about an 1/8" off the perimeter, but the plastic door liner is brittle and I fear chipping it out. I'm not sure how to evenly "deepen" the groove on the rubber material either so I'm just stuck. _________________

I got these two from McMaster Carr. I used the larger one and it seemed to fit pretty well. It is not an exact reproduction but it will work.

Is that the 6662? Hmmmm......if so, I wonder what I'm doing wrong? _________________

Holy cow, those are $97 shipped to the US. They appear to be perfect but the price needs to be closer to $50. |

The UK repo looks like a standard mini fridge seal. _________________ I make HWE style roof racks, Jim-Dandy racks, SO-33 metal parts, Dormobile racks, HWE style ladders, engine crank start handles, Westy rack tags, Binz tags, Sundial badges, State of California tags, steering lock electrical covers and single / double cab gate latch friction blocks.

Did anybody ever purchase the UK seal for the ice box and if so how did it work out? Their ad is deleted. |

Just went ahead and ordered the English seal replacement from Westfalia Spares UK. Granted; not cheap.
I'll post after I have received it and have had the chance to install it.
My current (original) seal isn't too bad, but I'm trying to fix up my SO-42 Ice Box unit entirely (will be saving for a new water tank too), and lately it hasn't been staying as cold as in years past.
Side thought/question: when I am doing work to restore the unit, should I be changing or adding some kind of (better/newer) insulation?
Here's the link to the product on-line:
http://westfaliasparesuk.com/product/6567-fridge-door-seal/
P.S. Looking for a good water pump replacement which can be found/bought nowadays (July 7th, 2015). Some older leads on The Samba didn't result with anything. _________________ ----------------------------------------------------------

|
|
Finally prepping to do some restoration work to our SO-42 Ice Box (which we use all the time).
I've purchased the 100% correct replacement seal from www.nlavw.com, but have seen/realized for the first time that the part of the fridge on the door which holds the seal on is help on by/with staples.
There's no problems getting them out/off, but I am curious to know what other folks did to reattach?
More staples, but not necessarily in the same exact locations (my concern with that is/would be cracking the aged brittle plastic of the cooler door).
Screws? Glue?
If you replaced your seal, what did you end up doing?
Thanks in advance for your answer(s).

In contemplation of the exact same procedure, I felt very careful and meticulous partial lifting of staples is the way to go. I plan to lay my door out in the sun this spring and see what happens. I think if each staple were pried up halfway the seal can be slipped underneath. Hopefully by then others will try. _________________
