How hot does the body of the Judson get during operation on a 40hp engine.

Has anyone measured the actual temperature of the housing during operation or under load?.

The reason I ask is would it be worth while to monitor the Judson temperature in order to avoid the meltdown that was experienced by John (I think) on his Judson when the oil stopped flowing. In addition, it would give an indication of the performance of the Judson and whether the belt tightness is correct (low T with little boost would mean the vanes are need of refurb or the belt is not tight enough)-- (High T - not enough oil to Judson or other issues to investigate)

No it wasn't my Judson that had a melt-down, it was Mike Gregory in this topic: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=427467

In answer to your question I did some tests about 10 years ago measuring the casing temperatures. I drove the same route of 7 miles mixed driving, (uphill, downhill, cruising, traffic etc) over several days.

Casing temperatures ranged from 43 degrees C (109 F) to 59 degrees C (138 F) at the end of the run. Air temperatures were between mid and upper 60s F.

It would be interesting to see what other users have experienced.

I have a FLIR camera. With Florida temps at 87 today I was getting about 155 on the housing. About 500 miles on the rebuild. Boost on the gauge develops almost 5. I will check again on longer trips. It has a rebuild Judson from George years ago so I’m sure the rotor has some wear but boost is good.
