Lind & I have been talking about finishing it in his memory. I would love to see it done.
I think the last time I saw him in person was in January 2007 on the way home from Busses by the Bridge in Lake Havasu. I passed through La Grande twice last August and wish I would have stopped by.
I was looking forward to seeing him this past weekend at the Vintage Meet, as he had plans to attend. I knew he was coming, and thought about emailing him last week but didn't. |

I remember enviously reading his posts about the cherrypicker single cab when he got it years ago. And of course, I recall all his searches for the year-correct nuts & bolts for that crew cab, from back on the vintagebus list.
It was such a shock to see this - add my thoughts and prayers to the rest... _________________ <---Air Cooled Search & Rescue Team - STICKERS & T-shirts for sale!

God's speed Dave, RIP.
Dave was one of the first guys I met from the Samba from the west coast when I went to the Classic several years ago. He and I Pm'd alot and I truly enjoyed the conversations we had.
I drove to north GA to pick up a set of Klipsch speakers he bought off of Ebay, damn heavy things! Packed them up and shipped them for him. He sent me a couple of Foreign Car mags and more $ than I told him it was for the shipping.
I also sent him a splash pan bolt off of my SC. I polished it up nice and pretty and sent it in a ring box. He said his wife was beginning to wonder about us!
I thought of him this weekend while talking with a farmer friend about his corn harvest......
My thoughts and prayers to his family. He was definitly one of the good guys. I'll raise a Belgian White wheat in his honor this evening. _________________ My '66 RHD Japanese bug build..which has stalled!

wow. really sad news. Dave was a good guy, could always joke around with him as well as get him all flustered about him not having correct hardware or parts for his resto-custom. rip David.

This is very, very sad.
I always enjoyed meeting up with "Dr. Mayes" at the West Coast shows, and interacting with him here on our favorite forums.
He was a brilliant man, with a terrific sense of humor.
Always making fun of his obsession about doing his bus correctly.
He will be greatly missed.

I would love to see that happen.
David is one of the people that I had always wanted to meet from on here. He seemed like such an incredibly interesting person. I've always been waiting to see him post that one of his inventions had hit it big and he and his family had become multi-millionaires over night. I always got that vibe from him... RIP Dave. _________________ -Andrew |

What a loss for anybody who knew him. I met him at the classic a couple of years ago. We jabbed at each other in jest all of the time.
I'll certainly miss that quirky dude... |

Damn.
I never met Dave, but he helped me many times with vintage specific questions. He was a true asset to the VW community and will be missed.
Thanks Dave. _________________ Glenn

Remember he started playing with the hydraulics while the front beam was still chained to the trailer? He lowered the outriggers and bent the frame. Those posts were heartbreaking. |

My best wishes to the family.
His search for correct KMAX bolts pushed "totally stock" to a different level.
I thought there would be time to meet Dave. |

In 2006 I went to The Classic and found out that he had already arrived and was introducing himself to everybody as "chickengeorge".
Classic Dave. |

+1. I never met Dave in person, though I sure felt like I did know him from all of my years on this forum and the vintagebus mailing list years ago. I'll never forget his strange affinity for Dorn and Kamax fasteners, gas tank felt strips and other assorted minutiae.
Years ago he was looking for a sun visor mount for either his tipper or bucket truck (I've forgotten which). In true Dave style, the part had to have a particular script on the back of it or he couldn't use it. I had one in my pile of parts and mailed it to him. He was like a kid on Christmas when he got it. RIP Dave. |
