|

While I have my engine out I thought I’d replace the gearbox input shaft seal. The one I removed was actually seated deeper than flush.
The new seal I got from Scott and it feels like this thing is bottomed out on the inner lip but it’s a bit proud. I of course did not measure the depth or take the Pepsi challenge and compare old versus new seal.
I assume this is acceptable? I don’t want to damage the seal by smacking it any harder. The plastic guide tube thingy has these three “tabs” that push into the seal, and with the bolts torqued down I assume this will be fine?

Plastic? , how low can some of these parts suppliers go?
If you can't hammer it in any more don't count on a plastic part somehow doing it, those raised parts on the sleeve are what shoved the old seal in so deep, I'd expect warping and binding, or cracking sounds trying to torque it up with the seal proud like that. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I dunno man. Seems pretty original to me with the Audi and VW logos both on it. There is a pretty thick metal “shim” for the bolts to bite into.
The inside surface of the throw out bearing is plastic, too, so seems right. _________________ 1977 VW Type 2 Bay Window Westy FI |

Plastic or metal, both seem to work fine, either should force the seal into place. I guess there is a possibility that some seals are manufactured to be a bit thicker which is why one sits higher than the other.
Maybe work your way around the three bolts than hold the guide in place giving each a 1/2 per pass. |

that seal bore is shouldered, meaning you send it all the way
it should be about 1/16 or so beyond flush. I literally just did this a few days ago _________________

As in recessed below the surface by 1/16”? Or proud of the surface by 1/16”? I assume you mean recessed but just want to be sure. _________________ 1977 VW Type 2 Bay Window Westy FI |

If you can't get the seal to sit further in, then maybe try another brand of seal. It's not uncommon though to find where the seal has been somewhat deformed by the guide pressing into it. No clue why the Germans designed it with an interference fit the way they did. |

I was looking through Ratwell's pics of his engine when he took it down to the long block. Guess what?
However, since you guys put the fear of god into me I bought a lovely metal version.
Also, had I only known that the guide tube would draw the seal into the correct depth when I started tightening it down I wouldn't have kept smacking on the damn thing so much

Too bad the boys got you paranoid about the clutch sleeve. There is nothing wrong with the plastic ones VW installed at the factory. They function just fine. In fact some of these same folks might have said that "it was good enough for the factory it will be just fine for you too." If they had known better. I mean how many years was that part working just fine with no problems before the paranoia reared it's ugly misshapen head.
Also if I had seen this sooner I would have mentioned that installing the clutch sleeve would draw the seal farther into the bore as intended. But I was too late to the party, but you figured that out yourself. |
