1: make sure you know your stereos wiring configuration. find the wire that turns on your system, should be 12v (NOT the 12v power wire that connects straight to the battery.)

2:make sure your door buzzer has been removed from your fuse box( this is based on my 1978 transporter)

3:you now are going to take a wire and strip one end and crimp a male connector to it (left one)

4: now looking at the fuse box from the cab we will be working on the right side of it on the under side (not front)

5: just wanted to say sorry its hard to see in most of my pics bc i have my trays in and didn't take them out to take the pics

6: you will need to find the power side of the buzzer. this is kind hard to see so see pics. in the pic the firewall is on the top, you will be on the opposite side of the fuse box. In the pic you can see my wire installed. its the same position as 34 but the second set over.(click to see full size)

7: after installing the fuse box side then connect the other side of the wire to your power switch wire i talked about earlier.

8: make sure your power wire is connected to the battery and then test it. just put key in ignition and it should power on. Very Happy

No he is getting power from the buzzer which is powered on just by inserting your key into the ignition. Your radio will turn on just by putting you key into the ignition. This is the best way to run your radio because you will never forget to turn it off (just pull the key out) and you can listen to the radio without have the power on (so you dont burn your points) Neat isnt it?

Joking. Really I don't know. What year is it from? Look in the classifieds for comparable ones to figure out a ballpark price and go from there.

Yes, it had a buzzer. However, I believe on the earlier bays this will not work as the terminal in question (25) is always hot. At least that's what I've found on mine (73).

Does the door have to be open for the radio to work?

The buzzer is powered up by just putting the key into the ignition. The buzzer is activated by the door switch. So anytime you open the door with the key in the ignition the buzzer sounds. keeps you from locking you keys in the car.

could this be done using a toggle or something as well?
my radio is usually loud enough i'll know if i leave it on or not...but i ahve burnt up 3 sets of points in the past 3 months just from listening to the radio whiile camping or washing the bus or something and forgetting to unplug the coil...definately would help to have a switch to be able to turn it on without having the key on...also, by doing this you could hook it to an auxilary battery easier too.

Yeah you could do that also. But why a toggle switch? Just run you radio power to a constantly hot wire and use the power button on the radio.

the cd player i have has a constant (hooked to 12v all the time) then it has a switched wire (runs to the key usually) the problem with having the key on is obviously ruining the points, if i ran both wires to a power source, even though the radio is turned off, wouldn't that still cause a draw on the battery? cause now your switched source wire has power going to it all the time

it may sound stupid, but i know that my radio has a couple of lights on even when turned off which could cause an added draw

Then yes you would have to run it with a toggle. I forget that some radios are still on even when turned off. (clocks, flasing security light ect.)

The buzzer wire hookup as above only works for alternator equipped vans.

On generator equipped models the wire from the key is a ground not a + power source.

Therefore you must use a relay tripped by this wire. Below is a diagram for Beetles. Should be the same for vans.
