Well, that helps explain the hitch mechanism... The rest could be home-made. There are a few sites that offer free templates for teardrop campers and the like that are built on standard Harbor Freight 4x8 utility trailers. I am sure that one of those templates could be modified to add the forward hitch mechanism.

god I would love one of those. although, I wish someone would make a car trailer like that. I could tow my race car with my VW! Slowly, I'll admit, but it would most likely do it... _________________ I can haz beetle?

I can't believe that no one here has built a similar trailer... It is now on my list! I might not get to it for some time, but I really want to make a camper trailer like this. Danfromsyr, I really like your idea of using a bay bus, but I don't know how you would get the weight distribution right. The axle would need to be moved up towards the middle in order for it to work... Any thoughts? I'm pretty serious about designing and building one. If anyone else is interested drop me a line. I'm thinking of calling it the elephant tear drop. _________________ "It should not be the the aim of the motor industry simply to bring out new models, but rather to produce and sell."

I'm terrible at backing trailers, this would be perfect. |
Don't mean to hijack this thread but...
When backing a trailer, put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel.
If you want the trailer to go left, move your hand left.
You want it to go right, move your hand right.

Has anyone actually driven a beetle with this attachment and trailer? I'd be curious as to their experiences. It seems to me that with the attachment point so high up, the trailer is going to exert some pretty significant forces on a light car because of that long moment arm (engineering-speak for the leverage that hitch has on the car's chassis because of how high up it is).
During normal driving, as the trailer pulls back on the hitch, it will transfer a lot of weight to the back wheels because of that leverage, and when side winds push the trailer there's going to be a lot of force pushing the car sideways too.
With a car as light as a Beetle I would think the lower the attachment point, the better and safer it is. Thus a hitch down in back in the usual place, and not way up there on the roof.
But nothing says more than first-hand experience from people who have actually used this set up. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

Havent had a chance to dig through it to see what goodies are inside. The hitch on the trailer is there but I'm guessing its missing the roof mounted ball. Would be easy enough to fab that. The big job would be getting this thing structurally sound. It is made almost entirely of wood. Needs some major structure work. _________________ CHECK US OUT ON YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsaYK9P6m68

I'm actually going to play the role of evil flipper here and hand this one off to the guys at Oklahoma Bugs. They are planning a full rebuild and will do it justice. This thing is beyond what I am willing to tackle but I am happy to play a small role in the story and pass it on to the pros. Good Luck with it guys. _________________ CHECK US OUT ON YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsaYK9P6m68
