you'll need to get all of that built up carbon and gunk out of the piston ring grooves.

Yep that is the plan. 1st of I am doing a 1st pass on all of the engine component to remove 90% of carbon and grease, and in a second pass I am going to nail into the fine details.

Nasty long job Rolling Eyes

Yesterday I bought a small sandblast cabin,
and blasted the heads with some glass beads.

I had to clean the heads at leasr 3 time to remove as much as durty stuff as possible so there is not that much left when doing the blasting.

Yep fun build activities should begin soon.
I just started to look over which NOS parts I could find.

So far here is what I need to replace:
- Camshaft
- 8 lifters
- valve guides
- valve intake and exhaust
- crankshaft bearing

I am still not sure if that engine requires a line boring.
This morning I have checked again and the current bearing I had in the engine just seat right in the case housing.

hello jerome.
Nice parts you have for the express engine. It's a good start, but there is a mix of 2 type of express kit.
Your intake pipe are the "3030" express type. that's the early ones used also on 25HP engine.
to connect the carbs to the linkage, you don't need the special clips. You need old style "rotule" connection. The clips are for the "6142" express engine.
Also express never used OT pulley or special oel fiting. not either this type of air filter.
All depend on how much you want to be close to the original ? i can help you with the details. In my opinion, you have a really nice looking car, and i would have kept it's original vintage look. no grill on the front lights for exemple. and even maybe not a vintage engine also. But if you still wanna put a vintage engine, maybe you want to be the closest to the original express engine back in time ?
Just my umble opinion. then it's your car and you better know what you want to do or not with it.
Warmest regards
Alex

thanks for the reply Kamax.

Here is a stand I just did for the kit so we can detail it more easily.

Normaly it should get the cyclone air filter but there are currently not reproduced, so the PO added the okrasa style air filter.

Alex, I will go close from this engine from Peter Plade, see pic below.

He has the same intake as I do and you're right he has the rotules that link to the carb. Do you know where I can find these parts?

I just opened a thread in the vintage speed forum, so other expert for this kit can help: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=670827

I have spent the past few weekends rebuilding the 6V generator.

Field coil insolation were in pretty bad shappe so I decided to redo it by using new cloth tape material.

So here how the field coil looked like at the begining:

And after removing the worn oiled paper insolation I was down to the wiring...

A local alternator repair shop gave me few tricks to get the coild fields re-insolated like new. And this is the end result I came-up with:

After getting the field coils restored I got the rotor machined for few bucks:

I took time to remove all of pieces around the bearing and cleaned up everything.

After that I re-assembled the fields coild onto the generator body.

Here is the trick to get the screw fully tighten in the generator body.
Without doing this it would be impossible to remove that little screw.

This is important to get the wiring positionned correctly outside of any moving part from the rotor:

Next step is to bring it to my local alternator repair shop to make sure there is no ground or electrical leaks.

Here is the lot of NOS part that will go on the 36hp engine:

NOS valve from a friend in France
NOS valve springs from US
NOS lifters from Finland
NOS K&S domed piston Cylinder from US
Camshaft is from Mr. Okrasa that I bought from someone in Netherland.

Without internet and Thesamba it would be hard to get these parts.

Heads are the OG one that I micro blasted and cleaned

I also got this 356A oil filler few days ago. I will have to build a flange adapter to bolt it on the 36hp case.
