There were a couple years ago, one std sedan and one std vert. I believe both were Revell. I built both.
I can't find my sedan one, it was MIA after we moved. The convertible I have in a curio cabinet with other VW models. |

You mentioned Type 2's, too. Hasagawa makes a pretty nice 23 window.
Modified models are much like modified cars...you should build it yourself, and you'll get exactly what you want. This thread is quite inspiring along those lines. _________________ Evan H.

Unless you really like a challenge, avoid the Revell models. The flash alone will kill you... The Hasegawa models are nice though. I have also heard good things about the Tamiya bug, but have never built one.
Hasegawa makes (made) a Cal Look '66. I'm not sure how custom it is, I haven't built mine... _________________ 1973 Volkswagen Beetle never ending project |

I did this one myself. I put some different wheels on it that look like Radars. I agree with this guy, take a stock kit and go to town.
A friend if mine took one of those green Revell Bus models and started to make me a crew cab.

I agree, take a stock kit and go to town; none of the currently-available kits have any of the true 'Cal look' parts already in place, so it's really up to you.
Resin-cast BRMs, a narrowed/raised beam and scratchbuilt rack made my rusty '56 really come to life IMO:

I second 2002sportside's comments on the Revell kits. Especially after putting together the Tamiya '66, you'll be disappointed. I think I have one or two Revell kits laying around. I'm out of the country right now, but when I get back I'll PM you, and it's yours if you still want one. _________________ Evan H.

Years ago I built a tubed frame race car using the Adam Wik race car on the cover of Hot VWs. I had my friend chop the top on a Revell kit and we also cut the front end off the bug to make it look like it had a 1 peice fiberglass front end. Car was awesome. I heated up regular round stock plastic for the frame. I detailed that car to the max. It even had a throttle cable on it. I used a single strand of wire so it looked like stainless steel and brought it from the carb linkage all the way to the foot pedal. It had a brake master cylinder and lines going out to every wheel. You can see in the third picture right above the batt and below the fuel tank up against the front wall. Well my son got a hold of it and this is all I have left of it. Not even the body survived.
You can see the positive batt cable going along the lower frame rail on drivers side.

how did you make the end of the plug wires stick? it wasnt super glue right? it would be pretty rad to make your own molds based off of one you like, just adding extra details. yeah right |

Drilled a hole where the spark plug is supposed to be using a very small drill bit the same size as the wire you are using for plug wires, then a small amount of glue and wala. Made the magneto out of scratch and did the same thing for the plug wires on that.

Here is a model my son Sam did. He really liked the Laffuers "Devils Hot Rod" red vert Bug, so he made one as close as he could. One thing he couldn't get figured out was the roll bar.

I took one of these and made it look like my ex-wifes old baja bug. Made a lot of parts for it myself and used wheels from truck models. It turned out pretty good as they both looked like crap. If I can get a picture of it I'll post it.
Auto Dioramas. Now this guy has a talent for detail. Check out the photo album. It will blow you away!

Got to keep this thread alive....here's a few more ovals:
Except for the fenderless VolksRod, all the rest started out as the Gunze-Sangyo '56 kit.
I really like doing these 'reunion' photos, as the black '56 was built for a friend and rarely comes to visit:

That almost looks like a photo from a local VW show. Good work! _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

Those dioramas are amazing! Makes me want to get out my unfinished Beetle model and make a diorama of my garage! _________________ -Andy-
