I think it is meant as a joke. an anti-consumerist statement even.
After I got my '85 painted white and nice and shiny I had a few people ask me what it was and if it was NEW!

It looks a little more like a G class van than a ML class van 
It would still be kinda poser, but more authentic looking to put Porsche badges on it and a B32 on the hatch, that could really throw an enthusiast for a loop
Mercedes van with curtains + exwife in the back = worthless
