Has anyone converted a 1.9 engine to 2.1 Thermostat?
Is it possible? |

There isn't much difference between a 1.9 "Case" and a 2.1 case. The 2.1 has an additional oil pressure sender and the place where the plenum bolts to the case near the flywheel is different. Everything else is directly interchangeable.
If you're installing a 1.9 engine into an '86 or newer Vanagon, then you'll have to use a spacer between the case and the plenum bracket near the flywheel ... or reshape the plenum bracket.
Of course, you'll want to move the oil cooler and it's extension pipe from the 2.1 engine to the 1.9 case.

No I just want to know whether you can install a 2.1 thermostat assembly into a 1.9l engine, and get rid of the 1.9 metal thermostat housing - they are NLA.... |

You would have to figure out how to replumb your cooling system. Never really given any thought to whether a hybrid was possible or if you would have to go with the full 2.1 system. A used 1.9 housing would likely be the easiest way to go. |

It would seem like it would be very possible. but, you would have to essentially replumb just about everything (including changing the water pump). Theres one metal pipe that runs along the drivers side of the 2.1 from water pump to the thermo housing thats about 100 dollars new, then you would also most likely have to run that plastic vac. thing that runs around the engine compartment in the 86 onwards. The major positive is that you could then use the factory 2.1 oil cooler... Actually, when it's all said and done, probably simpler and easier just to stick with the 1.9 housing.... and try and add some aftermarket oil cooler... |
