Gorgeous. I love that area. Looks like wilderness to me! A state park campsite is wilderness to some folks and we all like looking at Vanagon pix. Hope nobody is so shy they won't post photos taken off the edge of a major highway that gives the illusion of being in the wild. More Vanagons and trees to look at! I like the vacation photos in general. So where are the pictures of Vanagons parked in front of Paul Bunyan or a Giant Ball of String? You know...Big Giant stuff??! Post those folks! Those are fair game too, IMHO.

Deer Island, New Brunswick.
My wife and daughter can be seen watching whales from the campsite and my son is romping on the beach.

All packed up and getting ready to head out after a quick overnighter outside the ghost town of Caribou (elev 10060, pop 1), just west of Nederland, Colorado. It was a clear night, the Milky Way was brilliant, with lots of satellites and shooting stars. But, I forgot to check the wind forecast and the wind pushed the van around so much all night that it felt like we were on a boat. But it was warm and comfy inside.

On a 2 week camping trip from Seattle to Glacier National Park (Montana). Here is a photo in the Palouse area of Washington, near the 'town' of Diamond.

(For those who know about parking hot exhaust in wheat straw.......I risked this photo because there was heavy rain the night before and the wheat straw was soaked. And because it is a family farm....)

We went camping/fishing/canoing at Bucks Lake near Quincy CA and in the night a HUGH bear (350 lbs easy) woke us up rummaging around outside the van. I banged on the side of the slider and he ran off, but came back 2 hours later and woke up the next campsite, who's yelling woke us up. The bear then stayed around for 20 minuets before leaving for good.

Well, it's not exactly a giant ball of string but how about a couple of shoe trees?

I found this place in the middle of nowhere on Hwy. 20 between Vale and Bend, OR. I was driving my new Westy home to Napa, CA after buying it in Boise, ID.

Here is yesterdays loop from Santa Fe to Jemez and back

Valle Grande is a volcanic basin created when the mountain top blew off. Supposedly bigger than Mt. St. Hellens eruption.

In this next shot there IS a van, can you spot it.. It is at San Antonio Hot Springs, a 5 mile forest road takes you there.

After the hot springs, roll into the tiny town of Jemez.

Then leave by way of Jemez Pueblo, which has some incredible red rock formations.

This weekend up in Roosevelt National Forest.

Found this spot the night before, just as the sun was setting. We were the only people for a mile or two. Not bad for Labor Day weekend. The night sky offered up a million stars and a few shooting stars with temps in the fifties. Nice!

Best seats in the house to see the Medicine Bow Mountain Range. We were on an old logging road in Pingree Park.

We met up with our neighbors up around Red Feather Lakes at their "awesome" spot. It turned out to be right off a well traveled dirt road(opening day of bow hunting season). I'm still coughing up dust bunnies. We found this spot just a couple miles away and well off the beaten path. I think I'll pick the spot next time.

Hey Sodo, what size bike is that on the back? Do you have any close-up pics of that set up?

Honda CRF250X weighs about 275 lbs ready to ride and the carrier weighs 35 lbs including the ramp. More photos of the motorcycle carrier here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2497718#2497718

Yesterday...

Out with the kids for a beautiful Labor Day holiday weekend at Campsite 7, somewhere between Caribou and Rainbow Lakes Colorado.

Spent the day leisurely exploring the nearby forest and abandoned mine sites, plinking with the wrist rockets and sighting in the bows.

All leveled and ready to start cooking dinner: steak, shrimp, pepper and mushroom kabobs with pressure-cooked rice. The trick we learned on our last Moab trip was to make a little extra of everything to go into the breakfast burritos the next morning.

The dead pine in the background is an increasingly common sight along the front-range as the pine-beetles move east. So far, the infestation here has been relatively light, but the Lodgepole pines west of the Continental Divide have been devastated, with 60-70% losses. They've begin clear cutting the large areas of dead stands around Frisco to protect the watersheds against an anticipated large-scale fire.
