Fatchick/Bay bus wheel lug nuts: 14 x 1.5.
Snapon has a rethreader (like a die but cheaper) for under $3, including shipping. Errant hammer blows and a resultant inability to put lug nuts on are now a thing of the past. _________________ Not enough car seats fit into my:

M8x1.25 various lengths used all over the car. This is the most common bolt size. _________________ Glenn

6mm x1.00 = drain plate studs and engine tin screws.
14mm x 1.25 = spark plugs.
10mm x 1.5 = early head studs
8mm x 1.25 = late head studs
Glenn?? What is the size of the point hold down screw. I get a lot of distributors that have the wrong screw in them? _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

8mm x 1.25, but it is a pointed set screw. A special bolt. Same as the later cars. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

|
|
I was doing some hinge work on a set of late 65 & up T1 popout window latches. I had several broken pieces. I drilled out the pins in the pivots, swapped parts around to complete a set. Some hinges used roll pins & some used punched pins. I purchased some 3mm roll pins from mscdirect.com 2 sizes were needed, 10mm long & 14mm long. I also bought some "E" clips in 4mm size for where they mount to the glass. If you are taking apart a set of hinges to have them rechromed you may find these parts to come in handy for reassembly.
Roll pins (spring pin) 2 sizes needed
3mmX14
3mmX10
"E" clip Metric DIN 6799
4mmID X 0.7 thickness
I also have repaired a few Bus rear engine lid hinges. I originally used a roll pin for this application also but now bought some solid steel Dowel pins. Size needed is 5mmX50mm
I had to buy boxes of 100 of each listed above. More than I will ever use. If anyone needs any, send me a few bucks & I'll send some your way. _________________ 68 BUS

This type is nice (I have it):
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00952316000P?keyword=bolt+gauge
For getting diameter you can get something along these lines:
Go to Eastwood.com or McMasterCarr.com and do a search on "bolt gauge".
The length of a bolt is always from the bottom of the head (the side of the head that touches the work surface when you're fastening; it's the side where the threads meet the head) to the end of the threads. _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

I'm not a VW fasteners expert so I don't know if that will work 100%. Personally, I prefer to have one gauge for measuring threads and another for measuring diameter. That way you cover all your bases Some times you get a fastener that isn't a common size. Also, I do know that the seat belt bolt threads are NOT metric, they are measured as TPI (Threads Per Inch).
What you show looks like a good, general sizer. Your next purchase should be a tap and die set. I got a standard set and a metric set from Sears and it satisfies most of my needs...if it doesn't then I just buy the specific tap/die I do need Not only can you then make your own threads but you can use the set to chase (clean) threads. Both of my sets came with instructions. Super easy! _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

What about the screws that hold the rearview mirror on in a '65 Type 3? _________________

Just replaced the rear shocks on my '67 Bug, and I used M12x100mm bolts, which fit well. The threads on my new bolts were coarser than what was originally used, so if someone has a source for more correct bolts, I'd be all ears.

They are an SAE thread, not metric. 7/16 x 20 thread. 7/16 SAE Fine thread. 1 1/2" long. Grade 5. This is an industry standard for seat belt hardware. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Wow, learn something new all of the time. I actually used 7/16 in between the seats because it seemed to fit. However the holes near the doors did not. Could be cruddy or paint build up. Thanks again. _________________ --Mike--
