How's this for electrical gremlins:

Yesterday after a two hour drive in my 74 Super Beetle, I went to run a quick errand in the evening, and in doing so, turned my headlights on for the first time in quite a while.

When I came back, I turned the key off and removed it from the ignition switch, and my head lights turned off, but my car kept running. So I instinctively tried turing my light switch off, and my engine turned off. So my ignition switch and head light have swapped functions, and I haven't done anything with the wiring. This thing has personality!

This sounds familiar. Someone else had this happen. I'll do a quick search. It wasn't long ago.

Oh boy! This could get fun! My dimmer has never worked for the dash lights. They're always on when the ignition switch is on. I guess the first step will be to replace my light switch and make sure that everything is wired up to it correctly since I know there has always been a minor problem with that. Plus while I'm at it I'll check that there's nothing crossed in my fuse box. Late super beetle fuse boxes are so much messier than earlier cars.

On my Super, my head lights have always turned off with the ignition off, leaving only the running lights on. Is this the case for all 74 Supers, or is it another symptom of my problem? I don't think earlier cars are wired like this are they?

'71 and up headlights go off with the key. They also go off when you are cranking the starter over. This is the function of the X terminal on the ignition switch. In your car it also powers the defrost fan and wipers. They all go off when cranking to save power.
