My stuff I do is never as good as what you guys do, I kept wondering why my washer bottle wouldn't stay put and i finally figured out that there was a reason for the slots where it goes through the wheel holes. I looked it up on the internet and saw they were supposed to have a pin in them so I got a couple of large zip ties and cut them off and then tapered them so they would go through.

I used "U" shaped pieces cut from a steel coat hanger back before I went to an electrical washer system.
Why did I change? I wanted one that would actually work. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Put the motor back into my 68 today with my old man. Oil cooler seals gave up the ghost (on a brand new motor with less than 400 miles) so we pulled it to make sure. Ran it on the stand and she's good to go! Went on a little (freezing cold) night drive after to test it out.

Pulled the running boards and the molding strips. Boards are sound and will clean up nicely. I may opt for new rubber covers. Moldings are tattered and will not be replaced.
No rust at body mounts, and very little at fenders.
Added a spacer at Bowden tube, hoping to correct clutch engagement. Will adjust freeplay before test drive.
....
Today: Removed moldings from running boards. Rubber looks good. I will use small carriage bolts to fill the holes.
Applied Rust Restorer to the underside of boards, will do the same at body areas JIC.
Rust repairs and spot painting can now commence.
Some mechanical issues still remain... _________________ =BCE56=

Swapped an old beat up 31 carb that was a mess with a brand new 34. I had help.... lots of it. I could not get a Solex or similar. This one has no brand. |

It's been 2800 miles since I tuned up my engine. After driving around at near zero Fahrenheit for several days my timing felt off. So I filed my points down a bit, set the dwell, and re-set the timing statically. That resolved the issue and away I went.
I ran my errands, got home, and as I was pulling into the parking lot it died. It felt like I ran out of fuel. I coasted into my parking spot. I popped the cap off the distributor and the points looked good. Looked at the fuel filter - had gas. It was getting dark out so I just went inside. That night I kept dreaming of failed fuel pumps and cancerous coils...
That made no sense. I had to have caused it. Something I had done...
So I thought about it and came up with a theory. I headed out with a 10mm socket and my timing light. Sure enough - I forgot to tighten the nut on the distributor clamp, and the distributor had rotated counter clockwise advancing the timing so much it couldn't run.
So ya...
Then I go inside and wife is like did you fix it? Yes? What was the problem?
And I could have come up with something like "I was getting analogous dwell readings on the zircon rectifier" and complained about the quality of parts nowadays, and she would have marveled at how smart I was.
Instead I confessed I was an idiot and she baked me some little VW cookies. _________________ Repeat after me "I am smarter than metal!" |

I removed my 1500 from my 69 beetle. I believe the numbers matching engine has only 43,000 miles on it! It will be torn down and rebuilt and restored, upping the displacement to 1641, but retaining the original stock appearance. The engine runs great, but leaking lots of oil(of course). I don't know anything about the first 32,000 miles of it's life, but I don't think there was much maintenance done to it. When I got the car in 2018, I'm sure the fuel lines were the originals from 1969 - saturated with gas.
I'm fortunate to have found a veteran air-cooled specialist to take on the job. Once this engine is totally restored, it should last me for the rest of my adventures. My hope is to travel through the US taking in VW shows, meeting VW folks, Route 66, and checking out some iconic golf courses. _________________ Where would this hobby be if no one shipped parts.

Took the trim pieces to plater this AM.
Aluminum moldings will be stripped and black hard anodized.
Chrome plated parts will be media blasted to prep for paint.
I will post results. _________________ =BCE56=

Nice! The same Special Bug is mine! 1982.
But.... In novadays it's a pitty I didn't paint it in original color. Now my Bug is green/ grey/ blue/ yellow, etc. It depends on the sunrays angle. |

I like both locations, but if mounded on the front of the bumper it will probably get damaged (bent). I'm sure you will be careful, but someone parking in front of you may not be. _________________ Tom

The lower mounting does not cover the effect of the body color bumper, just have to watch out for parking curbs and raised sidewalks. _________________ 74 Super Sun Bug - OTTO

Installed front kick panels with speakers. Geez, what a difference having four speakers rather than only 2 rear ones makes. I never give this much thought in my wife's 2019 Subaru Forester... _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”
