I thought that a 912 had a 100hp engine but this is from Wiki...
The Porsche 912 was a sports car manufactured by Porsche of Germany between 1965 and 1969 as their entry-level model. The 912 was a nimble-handling compact performance four-seat vehicle, delivering 90 SAE horsepower at 5800 rpm.[2] The 912 was also capable of up to 30 mpg–U.S. (7.84 L/100 km / 36 mpg–imp) fuel economy. This combination was possible because of a high-efficiency petrol engine, low weight, and low drag. A variant of the Type 911, one of the most famous and successful sports cars of all time, the Type 912 initially outsold the 911, boosting the manufacturer's total production until success of the 911 was assured.
So the 912 only had 90hp, 5 more than the 91e? _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

Keep in mind that that was SAE Gross HP, where the test did not necessarily have to include such things as, say, the fan belt. Witness the VW 1600 DP making 60 hp in 1971 and 46 hp in 1973, with no changes in the power producing parts. Whole different test, whole different number, when the SAE Net rating started in the early 70s. Perhaps the 912E made more power than the 616 equipped 912. _________________ 2000 M Roadster

porsche detuned the engine for the 912. compared to the last 356's.
the 912's lighter than the 911 (due to the engine) and also the 912 engine is further back in the engine bay so is less tail happy than the 911.
so all in all the 912 perfomance was close to the 911 and a lot cheaper to buy. hence the detune on the engine. |

According to The Maestro, there is no difference between a 356SC engine, and a 912.
It's some peoples opinion that the "detuning" was actually a marketing myth because the first few years of the 911 were just over 100hp themselves... Instead of playing that up, they played the 912 down, to justify the cost difference. |

The engine output was the same between 356 and 912 according to those who have taken each motor apart. Given that nearly all of the 912 motors (like mine) have been 1) rebuilt and often with larger displacement piston and cylinder kits 2) Weber or modified Solex carbs, we can assume their current power output is even higher and their great balance makes them a fun car.
