Well my back up lights are on full time and with the Berg 5 it's virtually impossible to get to the back up switch for replacement without R&R the engine and tranny. Anyone have a trick to get it unstuck? |

You may try lightly tapping it with a wrench... If it stuck once, it will stick again.... R&R may be ultimate fix..... OR maybe its in to far and not even capable of releasing....

I think it's just stuck. This is a new problem. Only thing is the car has just 300 miles on it |

If you think it's an old switch and somewhat accessible, you can try spraying some "electronic cleaner" on the switch and hope it will get into the switch to remove any gumming up of the electrical contacts. |

Here's the problem... you have a aftermarket switch. They are longer than the OEM Hella switch. That 3/8" longer really jams it into the forks.
Get a Hella, but you'll have to remove the engine and then the tranny to do it.

consider cutting a hole in the floor of the black seat that is just big enough for a socket wrench for removal and replacement of the switch. you can get a blind hole plug from an electrical supply house or lowes/homedepot to close the hole watertight. lots less time and bad words. i'm a ghia guy and have not owned a beetle for 25+ years so i don't know exactly were the spot falls on your car but i think it would be a solution for my chassis. ain't it fun? |

I've thought about an acess hole. I don't think the switch is an aftermarket sort. First I'll see if it will free up with a gentle tap. I'm not looking forward to R&R the engine and tranny but it's only a day. I still don't like the idea of not having access to the switch so a small hole may be the ticket.
This is in a ghia too. |

You might be able to get away without doing a full R&R. Try undoing the shifter, throttle and clutch, loosen the mounts and slide the engine/trans back enough to tip the nose down. PITA! _________________ --

Thanks for the idea Eric I see your idea except on the berg 5 the switch is located on the passenger side of the nose cone and is obscured by the frame horn. I got to loking at it and I think with a mirror, some wrench fabrication and welding that I might be able to get to the switch with taking everything out, at least I hope. No luck finding a Hella in Reno. |
