Great work so far! I might have lost hope a long time ago, but this is really coming together.

well, not just photos and progress.
i have a bunch of questions regarding my june 52 split correctness:
1. does the lower windshield area have some drainage holes in the left and right ? just like the 3 holes under the rear view windows?
2. what type of headlights should i run? i have now small bosch script headlights rings with screws at hrs 9 and 12, should i have the ones with the screws at 4 and 8?
3. how can i determine whether my rims were painted one off color or wax red/cream?
4. was the L handle with key or without originally?
thanks.
ps. sorry i used Mircea's user .. _________________ I always know when I'm stupid, so, don't tell me! |

My answers:
1. Yes, one on each corner.
2. Both are ok, Bosch with 9/12 and Hella with 4/8. You can't mix inside parts together of those.
3. See on some list example here on "Technical/Paint" pages.
4. Both are correct, they put without on factory line and you could buy accessory handle with key.
I have also June '52 Split!

thank you Virtanen!
i will do as you said above.
a question.. what VIN is your split? i found one on this very site that is a very few cars away from mine..
today some progress in the front: 3 finger apron that developed another one. nice fit and finish, but welding need more tlc.
well.. we've checked the front hood fit and i am still not satisfied. anyone knows a better way to align front hood gaps to the body?

hello, i will do some pics in the afternoon (Eastern European Time ) and post here. i just can't figure out if the hood is bad or the body, although the front is not and was not damaged in the past. _________________ I always know when I'm stupid, so, don't tell me! |

I haven't seen a perfect split very often and comparing your project, just accept some tolerances here and there. Front hood support may have caused many problems we have now.
My split was done on 6.6.1952 |

You're making better progress than the guys restoring the 1938 prototype found in Lithuania. I'd paint over the welds without grinding them, I like that Frankenstein look. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

i am not keeping the welds to show. it's not what i have in mind for it.
dash is in place. left side is hand made by Mircea. we used the left side from the normal dash and formed it into place. not a pleasant task and not easy at all.. but it came out eventually.
i received the H apron, very bad shape as you can easily see but started cleaning and prepping it for grafting.
the split is now a split and one of the cats was pleased, but was asking what is the next step... see her tail is shaped like a " ? " ( we call her "the mechanic cat" because she's very fond of any car that enters the garage, and very curious of course)
So far we did not use any new repro parts on the car. there was a stripe of metal used to repair the firewall area, and all the small patches were cut fron the leftovers of the rear clip from Sweden
in the future we will repair the A pillars and heater channels by manufacturing every piece necessary. one thing needed repair and we cannot do: the thin stripe that holds the hoods seal into place, and it was ordered. i hope no more new parts will be used. not because they are repros, but because they are not entirely correct and lack the quality.
as for the comparison with the typ38 car... let's not compare these cars. mine was still rolling on its pan, was complete after all and the "common" split is not near as rare as the typ38 parts. i can imagine their work of seeking the correct parts and hand crafting the parts needed. they do a wonderful job and i am sure that car will be ready sometimes soon
PS sorry for the fuzzy pics

Very clever work to create the four-finger apron. I'm enjoying the progress photos! _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

ok, back on track!
some things happened in the last weeks... see the pics
first rear peek into the mirror... not bad, not bad at all... i've dreamed about this view for a long time now..
so, rear apron is done. this was a very tricky job as the newer rear apron is different than the old H apron in shape, so a lot of man hours went just into this small detail .
dash and doors , just for pics purpose. we still have to repair some damage on the doors and A pillars.
taillights and popes nose in fiberglass, thanks to Blue Baron, added up to check fitment and do necessary mods to the right fender, as in dimple placement, and to get the W decklid to accept split popes nose, as it was oval era not split.
now it looks like i have a split, it feels like a split and after all these many hours i can say this car already received a new life
so bye for now, more progress pics soon i hope.
i almost forgot that during the rear apron tests for fitting i tried what appears to be the rarest pre-kdf pre-prototype era pope's nose...

ok, it's been a while (again..)
just did some things.
not so much progress to be seen, but as Mircea says : "all is done remains done. every little thing counts as progress"
We welded the front trunk panel in place, did the B pillars, the A pillars, welded all the firewall holes, and lots and lots of small things.

some more pics... rear apron work, etc
BEWARE of brasilian parts... or at least body parts... they suck big time !!!
fortunately only the A pillar sections were repro parts .. al the rest is handcrafted from genuine vw sheetmetal cut from a 59 decklid
the A pillars had only 3 hinge holes , so one was added and beveled as you can see.

You are in the good direction, again another split saved for the future.
The body looks very solit, and a good carpainter can fix al these weldings to become a nice shining car. Good luck and keep posting !
