May of 2009

It's a semi-annual event. Always in May and October. Although there was a hint that they may start doing a summer one.

I believe this hint they talked about is the current Knoxville show but move it to the fairgrounds. Anyone who has been to the Knox show knows how HOT it is with 100% of the show on blacktop. If the same shows was at the Sevierville fairgrounds it would be cooler because of the grass, of course being July it will still be warm. I have always dreaded the Knox show because of the heat.

I did get to see your car and talk to Mike some Sat night, but he seemed a little preoccupied on Sunday. It must really suck to have to work on your car instead of enjoying the show, but I guess he got it going.

I have parked the Ghia and am now going to get my 65 ready for Spring. I got to talk to the guy with the red 61 I believe with the turbo. Really nice car as well as the rest in your crew. I'll make sure I look you up in the spring.

Hopefully the turnout for spring will be as good as it was last week.

John

Cool deal man. Ya Justins new ride ( red turbo ragtop ) Is sick for sure. Cant wait tell dyno day to see it run. Which ghia is yours? I picked up a 69 ghia might fiddle with it some after a while.

Even with a top 75, I still felt obligated to wipe the car down (though not as much as usual). And again, many people probably got awards for the first time. And believe me, it feels good to be appreciated for the work you have done on your car.

With the participant based judging, I myself only voted in the categories I was interested, early beetle, 60's beetle, ghia, and type 2 (I didn't vote on the water coolers).

This way, even the unrestored and ratty VW's get a vote (I like them just as much).

Supposedly there are plans to expand the fairground site to make room for more cars. I was looking forward to the burn-out contest, but due to the amount of cars, there was just not enough room.

According the the event planners, the Knoxville show (cost wise) is much more expensive from the site fee, security, and cleanup. A club member and organizer told me that there was not much profit from the Knoxville show this year.

I do agree that the fall show was larger and more fun.... This could be attributed the the fall being "the last hurrah" for us midwesterners and it is almost time to put the toys up for the year.

I still am planning to come up in the spring as well as the fall for the shows. A summer show may be a little overkill. If it were my decision I would do a summer and fall show, although many big midwestern shows occur in the summer.

As far as the top 75 approach to the show. I believe this may be a little too much for the show. With a turnout of about 180 cars, the show would be a little more competetive with maybe a top 50.

Again, this is all opinion, but I really like the approach in judging by the Covvc (Central Ohio Vintage Volkswagen Club which put on the Ohio Volksfest show) in letting the "participants be the judge". The turnout was close to 350 cars this year. Upon entrance with your show vehicle, the staff gives out ballots to you. You go around and look at the cars and pick your favorite. You only get one vote and the votes in each class are tallied and a 1st, 2nd and 3rd are given. The only downfall in this could be the club turnout and voting for all of the cars in your specific club.

I personally judge based on the owners that do alot of their own work and do not necessarily vote for the cars that are shipped to Colorado with $20g in cash and an owner that waits for the completed show car to return.
Any hoo, just a thought.

John

The vw classic is voted this way , it is cool in a way but then not in others. Me personally I like a judge to judge the cars , Last thing I want to do at a show is to have to go around and vote all day long. Confused i like the layed back attitude at the top 75 show , but then again I dont mind polishing a little on mine , most of the time people come up and ask ? when you are doing it so it kinda fun. Good way to meet new people. Cool

On adding the summer show , I would more than likely go what ever happens. was thinking about it might be cool if there was a more camping area for it in a diffeent location just to change it up. maybe a park type setting?

I am looking for the guy that had the pair of dual carb, single port intakes.
Second row on the left at the far end. He was asking $20. Cast aluminum.
I had to leave the show early and did not make it back before he left.
I need them bad if anyone can help. Thanks
