So I purchased the Airkewld Bolt on kit and everything is going back together now. Realized the other day I do not have a mount for the steering damper and the beam is already finished.

So I see that empi makes what appears to be a Billet Bolt on piece although from the pic I can't see exactly how it comes apart to bolt around the beam so I don't know.

If I leave the damper off is my steering wheel going to be constantly jerking all over the place? its a 4" beam and I am running smoothies. Thanks

A steering damper is nice to have. It just makes things more comfortable and sometimes keeps the wheel from jumping around.

That billet piece has to have some sort of screws holding it together or else you couldn't get it on the beam.

You will also need the right side tie rod or tie rod end that has provision for the damper.

The Air ride should make for a smooth ride so I will just be dealing with a jerky steering wheel? Could it be dangerous to not have it?

You'll be fine using this. If you looks closely at the photo, you can see a seam where the clamp splits in half as well as where the two screws are to clamp it together. Without your steering damper, you'll end up developing Popeye-like forearms.
Oh yeah, nice pan you have there!

I wouldn't say wildly dangerous. Beetles didn't get them until the end of the '60 model year, so there's plenty of cars without them. Basically, when you hit a bump, it's not natural for your wheels to stay straight. The steering damper keeps 'em in line. If you're paying attention to your driving, the lack of one doesn't make the ride treacherous.... but it's definitely more relaxing with one. On early cars, much like the manual choke, reserve lever, splitcase trans, etc.... it's all part of the fun. Very Happy

I think I see a faint line in that picture of the billet mount where it separates. That's probably the way to go.

ninja edit: sorry for the echo in here on that last point. Razz

Without seeing this product in person, I would suspect the screw holes we can see in the picture are the set screws to keep it from turning and sliding on the beam.

There has to be something to keep it together. It's a nice looking piece in the photo and I think it would look nice on your nice looking beam.

thank you for posting this great pic.
i also have a airkewld 4"bj beam and was wondering how to solve this same issue.

also what are you doing about the lack of steering stops on airkewlds narrowed beams? i was thinking of fabing a bolt on steering stop using 2 of the billet damper mounts.

what are you using for a steering stop? anything?

thanks!

If anyone is having trouble finding these for less than $40 plus shipping I have access to them through a local VW buggie shop for $30 plus shipping. Picked one up today! Way cheaper than anywhere online! Cool

No steering stops needed. No rubbing issues at all with the body, fender or light buckets.

That's nice looking work. What did you use to paint or powder coat your pan and beam?

i have a question, partially not related to topic.

i see that the steering damper is optional and is linked to maneuverability over bumps and holes in the road.

i just want to ask you guys.. how does a narrowed beam with no shocks handles on an everyday use? do the torsion leaves in the beam have anything special besides being shorter?
