It sounds like it is going to start, but doesn't. the van hasn't run right in over a year. During winter break last year I replaced the fuel, and air filter and a good portion of the exhaust. Then right before spring break I changed the passenger side head-which turned into a fiasco. First the new water jacket seal just disintegrated as we were driving out of town. Then on the reinstall, a stud snapped. Fast forward to the end of June (summer) and I finally get the broken stud out and everything put back together. The van starts great five straight times. Idles for 5+ minutes on two occasions. the I go to do a test drive and it dies and won't restart. I replaced five hoses and have cleaned electrical connections. Now it sounds for all the world like it is going to start when you turn it over-but won't. Roars-then dies in a second. I'm slowly going insane.

When was the last time the fuel filters were changed?

Cause and effect.

It ran good?

you disassembled it to put on a new head...... Why? What was wrong with the head?

Why only one head? Standard procedure is two.

You assembled it.

What did you not put back correctly?

Double check your work.

I changed the filter by the pump in Dec. and the van has only a couple hundred miles since then.

After I put the head on, yes it ran better than it has run in a long time. Sounded strong, idled well.

you disassembled it to put on a new head...... Why? What was wrong with the head? Got a compression check, came back head cracked (it was) so I replaced it. Was going to eventually do both sides when I get the $$.

Yep. And it ran great. Started 5-6 straight time. ran for well over 1/2 hour. then went to take it for a test drive and it died. Replaced some questionable vacuum hoses, checked the spark, checked the air filter, all good.

What did you not put back correctly?
Nothing that me or four of my friends can find. One is a mechanic who actually teaches at the university and two of the others are van owners. They are stumped. We've gone over the engine multiple times-thus the hose changes.

Double check your work.
Done and done and done and done.

First check and answer......
Do you still have compression in all four holes?

If so, you're 1/3 fixed, now it is
an ignition problem
Or
A fuel problem.

It has to be one or the other.

If you have spark and fuel, are they at the correct places. At the correct time?

By checking back in previous posts, you have an 87 2.1

Make the diagnosis loom found in the FAQ section, you'll find the issue lickity split with that!

Finally was able to work on the van again. Tried out the harness-no start. If I hold the key in the start position, it runs very ruff, but runs nevertheless. Still confused.

This sounds like a mass air flow issue. Is the air box attached to the throttle body well? No air leaks? Is tge box closed properly? The wires attached good?

MAF is a good candidate to look at. I had the same symptom on a Volvo and the MAF sensor was the culprit.

Those symptoms suggest that your ignition switch may need to be replaced. They do fail.

Take a jumper, jump from the hot lead on the Alternator to the hot side of the coil.
Start the van with the key, If the van stays running then you have a bad ignition switch. Or you can start it up and then hold the key in the On position , not the start position and it should stay running as well.
If that does not do it then we need more intel.

This harness, https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=349429 already checks the ignition. Gonna check MAF sensor. Disconnecting it led to the van starting on a camping trip right before all this started happening. Totally forgot about it.

I have determined that the problem is the air flow meter. Where is the best place to buy one?

You can check the usual spots for an air flow meter.
