|
|
I know, I know, another exhaust thread. But you can rule out The Thing Shop exhaust because I already have it and I don't really care for it. It is too restrictive and I am sooo tired of fighting them to do valve adjustments. The two main things I am concerned about is that I will easily be able to access my valves and it won't be too restrictive, even for a moderately built motor. I would prefer it to exit out of the bumper holes, but I can live with it if it doesn't. This is for my 73.
Thanks,
Scott

I have had this Denmark-built replacement for the stock exhaust for 2 years now:
http://www.thingsforthething.com/catalog/index.php...ltmk3gkgk5
It fit perfect, even through the bumper holes. It is less restrictive than the real stock unit. It was only slightly louder than a stock unit. It does not interfere with valve adjustments, and does not impart heat right onto the heads.
It has not rusted at all (though it has had 2 wipe-downs with WD-40) and has not leaked at all. It does weigh a bit more than the stock unit though.

Thanks ALG, but I wonder if that one may be too restrictive. It seems to be based on the stock exhaust system. Noise is not that big of an issue with me.

try socal I think they have a nice system now.
of course s and s headers also have a nice system too, or you can get a standard beetle muffler with flared tips
or a monza ttype |

I really like my Gene Berg system. It's your typical header with a quiet pack, but it's all Thing specific with lots of clearance. I sand blasted before install and painted it with Barb-b-que paint, 5 years later not a speck of rust. A customer of mine went with Kymco's Thing specific header and quiet pack in ceramic coat and it's real nice too, but the muffler is huge, too big for my taste. _________________ --- The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at and repair.

I bought this S&S system http://www.headermania.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen..._Code=4CYL from Mattt thinking this would also allow easy access to the heads. I hope it fits but, I have an external oil filter that may have to be relocated somewhere else. I like where Captain Spalding put his oil filter and cooler. But that's another project. _________________ "Okay, so there's 6 beers and 5 of us. You know what this means don't you? 4 of you are going to have to leave."

The question is...will it allow easy access to the valves? Please let us know when you get it installed. Thanks! |

What do you think of the sidewinder?
From another thread:

I tried a Sidewinder on my Thing for a while, but I returned it. It tucked up nicely and performed well, but it still interfered with my Thing Shop trailer hitch and the muffler had to removed to adjust 1/2 side valves.
Not my car, but from the gallery:

Tiger at A-1 makes a sidewinder that exits through the bumper hole but you will have to remove the muffler to adjust the valves on the passenger side-they do make a quick release exhaust clamp for the muffler though. |

You can still adjust the valves with an s and s header,( and some of these others)
you either need to use a stubby screwdriver or a really long one
I forget which.
The rumor about adjusting your valves on an s and s header was perpetuated by the thing shop so you would buy theirs. |

I just sent an e-mail to S&S and hope they get back to me. Does anyone have any pictures of the S&S? Price?
Thanks!
edit: Just looked at the link to the picture. What about price? |

That same S&S link says $122.75 and "with M-T92 Mufflers not included". (and shipping?) _________________ "Okay, so there's 6 beers and 5 of us. You know what this means don't you? 4 of you are going to have to leave."

OK, Sorry I didn't see it because my computer screen wasn't at full size
Just looked over their site again and see the mufflers are another $236.95 + $122.75 + tax and shipping? = $359.70 +.
And that's in color black not cermaic coated! |

I bought mine from German Motor Works. If I recall the telling of the tale correctly, GMW had a bunch of these custom exhaust systems fabbed up, and I just happened to get the last one. It looks to me like a Kymco header and a couple of custom fabbed bits. Or maybe the whole thing can be had through Kymco.
Plenty of room for valve work. Exits through the bumper holes, although a bit of the manifold does protrude beyond the bumper. Louder than stock. When the motor was fresh it was obnoxiously loud. Now that the motor is broken in and running a bit quieter, its tolerably loud. |

Now that's the ticket Captain Spalding! I need a new one because the one I have is 1-3/8" and that's not going to work with this 2275cc that I'm building right now. |

Some people have complained about getting burnt by the s and s header I suppose any exhaust might burn you, if you get to close to it.
Seems like the thing shops doesnt stick out too far
actually I really should retract that statement about the thing shop perpetuating that the s and s is harder to adjust the valves.
I really dont know where it came from.
On my stock motor, I just use a standard muffler with flared tips, anything larger would require a header like the thing shops, or s and s. |

So the S&S is more valve adjusting friendly than The Thing Shop exhaust? |
