Auto or stick? If auto, put it in neutral and try it.
The park position of the safety switch often wears out. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

failing that...ignition switch. $12 part that eventually fails due to lotsa amps runing through a plastic tinkertoy part. Wiggle the wiring and plug that goes into the ignition on the column while you try cranking. This is what gave mine a random no-start/power for a few months till we tracked it down. Just come out to start it and nothing: no dash lights, starter, fuel pump whine... Then as soon as I pushed on the wiring everything would be fine. If it works replace your Ignition switch asap. if it doesn't then unplug below the ignition and hotwire it (use a wire to jump from starter to ground) and see if anything goes. Search the samba for the right leads to connect. If that works replace your switch asap. If nothing there then it's something else. _________________ ---------------------------------------------------

Stay simple, especially if all was well just recently. Get underneath on the passenger side and make sure your hot wire to the starter is correctly attached to the starter terminal, if so clean it up real good and add some dielectic grease. See if that helps.
All good there, check that your fuel pump is working, fuel pressure good? Then check for spark at plugs. Do a search, there are a few threads on here on basic trouble shooting. _________________ ~Bryan

Yeah, try this, mine comes loose every so often. Disconnect the battery first.

I got it figured out right after I posted
Indeed loose wire on the starter..it had fallen all he way off..
What a PITA in a syncro there is no way to get your hand up in there to hook it back on the terminal. It took some real work to get it back on there |

wouldn't the starter still crank the engine if those were problems?
or is there some funky relay or ECU circuit I don't know about...?? _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

Your right, I was getting ahead of myself. I have had this no start before and it has always been this wire disconnect. _________________ ~Bryan

interesting
I think I'll check the cable to the starter on mine - you just reach up there and see if it wiggles, right?

Not so much the hot wire to the starter but the small female spade tip wire that goes on the solenoid part of the starter _________________ "Always waiting for tomorrow ruined everything"
