X's 2.. yeah what skills said.
there are no more $500 shells. shyt who would bother to post a $500 shell just to field the calls.
this will be sold within the month.. probably quicker.. and well that's quick enough for most sellers.
those dog legs look clean. especially east coast..

i was embarrassed to admit i paid 800 for the parts bus behind my house back when i built my deluxe in '13-'14.
unless you know someone or something....the days of the cheap bus is over.
based on current trends, any project (vw or otherwise) is going to be 2k minimum. these are the 500.00 projects we remember from years ago. welcome to inflation/supply and demand |

Took a minute for him to tell me he is asking $2800 which in his opinion is a fair price and that he also has had a lot of interest in it at that price.
When I said I’m out at that price level, he promptly hung up on me before I could even finish my sentence. I’m ok with that, I’ve got thick skin. What bothers me is that that might be a “ fair” price.
I sure as hope not considering it’s condition. And if it is “ fair”, then I’ve been scoring some real sweet deals up till now. |
I looked at that shell last year, it was in my home town, Canton Ct., it is a bit rough, and that is a 3 person middle seat, about the only good thing with that bus. The dash is long gone, and it has been sitting a while w/out glass outside....
I'm sure he has a bunch of interest in the Bus, FB flippers are ravenous for Buses, and their FB prices are a fucken JOKE... |
Probably why he was quick to hang up on me. As i was telling him that was too rich for my taste, and that i know the true value of these, because i have a few, ……..dial tone.
How bout those two westy’s that were down in Bennington for $4500/ea? Was watching that ad for a couple weeks and now its gone. Was about a 4+hr ride for me, so wasn’t that interested until price broke.
I thought I stretched a little too far on my last 77 westy buy at $1700, but it was all original, deluxe camper, with all the ecoutremonts, so based on this other shit, I’m feeling better about it. |
Yea, the Bennington ones were to pricey for my Cheap ass, they were on cl until a few days ago, so someone must have grabbed them. I've been waiting out a '75 westy for 2 years now, sitting since the late '90s, going to stop in again this weekend, maybe he will be ready to let it go... _________________ Tom

i always love that line. i probably would have hung up too.
you know what YOU are willing to pay. like i said...the 500.00 buses are pretty much all gone and having lived thru that era myself i have to realize we're 30 years later. yea, you may get lucky from time to time but it's not the norm anymore.
in '07-'08 i paid about 2,700 for my 71 westy and drove it home. drove it as-is for a couple years before i dug into it. at the time it was the most expensive air cooled i had bought. those days are over.
cracks me up when people get all butthurt about prices yet when they go to sell something it's GOLD because it was theirs. not saying you in particular....just about everyone on this forum
and not for nothing.... everyone trying to buy this shit for pennies on the dollar usually have more than one, will never finish any of their projects to a decent level of restoration and all of a sudden become the guy everyone bitches about.... the "i'm gonna fix it someday" guy who just lets it rot on the side of the house because now all of a sudden they own it...it's "rare and valuable" _________________

I remember when I was a kid in the 90's (yeah I'm not as old as most of you guys, but I remember when you could play with Bel-Airs without a mortgage), my Dad and I driving around looking in open garages and barns, seeing if we could catch a glimpse of old cars. I can't remember the number of people we met that were like that.
People in wheelchairs, old guys that were weeks away from death, 20 years of crap piled on top of cars, cars sunk into the mud up to the axles... it was all the same. "I'm gonna fix that up someday"

It is mental. That's all most of those duffers have at that point, memories of the past and the reminders they situated around them.
How about a shop full of goodness? Old John Whipple and VolkSmith in San Antonio TX. Texas Gold was the place many people in the area know-knew about. Old John passed, his son sold and junked it out as far as I know. John did sell on occasion, but you paid top dollar most the time. It was kept in such a condition because he held onto the memory of his diseased son that ran it with him. When his son went, the place stopped in time.

i can understand that to a point. i mean when you're circling the drain no amount of money is going to change your life. if the only joy you have in life at that point is a fresh diaper and looking at your stuff who cares?
and the way i see getting "top dollar" is it weeds out the flippers and bottom feeders.... if you really want it, you're really going to pay up for it.
that's not to say deals aren't still out there but the starting price has for sure increased in the past 20+ years
another thing i think of when it comes to the "i'm gonna fix it" crowd is when they kick it could be a way to get the surviving family a few bux. granted they may auction it or sell it for pennies on the dollar but it still went to them instead of being tied up in court etc _________________

The 1974 Hard Top Westfalia Build
2010 I paid $2,500 for this bus. Very complete, very solid. You guys watched me learn and futz with it for 10 years. I spent maybe 15-18k on it - including costs to move it around. Texas to Seattle - Seattle to San Diego. Sold for $28,000. None of my labor is included in the cost. Just a good base on what it cost to do these things up. Ill never do another bus again. I wanted to do that one because I saw the costs and prices/rarity increasing. I was a gnats ass close to buyin a nice 67 pop top Westfalia. I didn't like how I fit in a split. So I went all Bay. Back to the $2,500 - some thought I was nuts, others saw the increasing rarity of complete, unmolested examples. Id say that same bus today in that shape is 10 to 12k.

Enjoying these last few posts to either confirm or dismay my opinions of my projects values. Y’all may know that I’ve got my ‘77 westy rolling around and while it looks like shit right now, its a solid running camper. Someday it will get the bodywork attention it deserves. But my main focus is my daughters ‘76 tintop camper that I’m building for her. Until that’s out of the garage, all other projects are on hold.
My point in that is, that I’m buying up whatever half descent late bays I can find, for as small as money as I can find, for parts and future projects. I’m fortunate to have the space to store them and all their parts for now. I even have one in my basement (72 tintop).
5 busses, 7 engines (2000 FI), and bins full of parts. Hoarding? Yeah maybe. But when I need a few bits and pieces, they’re there in one of the bins. Sure, I spend regularly with BD, and others, but its nice to find that one little bracket or piece of engine tin i need right there.
I’m not a flipper, I’m a buyer. I find it easier to buy then sell. Ive only got a few more years to an early retirement (at 55), and these bins of bits and pieces will be my therapy and MAYBE a little side money.
Back to the original thought. Was I arrogant to think i knew the value of what the guy was asking for that ‘77 ? Yes, yes i was. Cause I do know the value of what he was selling. The value to ME.
Again, enjoying this discussion and hearing others opinions of perceived or actual value. East coast vs. west coast. Rot vs. dry. OG vs doctored up. It’s all good. Cheers. _________________ You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. i hope you didn't take what i said personally....
i bought a 15 window in 1990 when i was 11 for 150 bux.
in high school i bought a 71 camper from my history teacher and drove it home for 300 bux
my point is...those days are over. everyone's reality is different, no doubt.... but i still stand by the fact no matter what car...hobby or otherwise is at least a 2k cost of admission these days.
at 42 i have come to the realization 'less is more' and i'd rather have a nice well sorted ride than 1 half assed ride and 7 others 'i'll get to someday'
believe me...i've walked away from pretty decent stuff because i had a max price and wasn't willing to budge but for me it becomes do i really NEED it and usually that answer is no _________________

Don't take any of it personally. This is all talk while having a beer together. Except not actually being there, some don't drink, others wouldn't have a beer with me anyways, some I wouldn't want to, and yet even more so - fight over what kind of beer. _________________

oddly i can't do beer unless it's the cheap shit like bud lite or Narragansett. anything else gives me a wicked headache by the time i drink down to the top of the label.
however i can shithouse a bottle of captain, buttershots or any other high octane liquor stand up straight and be up the next morning with the sunrise.
but to your point it's all just good old chitchat _________________

That kind of BeeR is in the Road Soda/Wobbly p0p category.
I am with you on the bottles of higher Octane for sure When most folks look at me with that air of confidence and say they want to drink with me, I always ask - what bottled spirit do you want? Culls the heard real quick.

Not that it maters, but, I literally grew up on Narragansett Bay (Riverside), Worst beer then as a kid, and not too much better now as an old guy. But I still buy a rack or two with my PBR.
Again, appreciate the opinions here cross country (Notch), or right at home.
Confident that the people here, regardless of location, and/or opinions, have a common goal/mindset to help each other out. Let’s face it, we all, that actually work or restore these beasts, are a dying breed.
As usual, I’ve been drinking, an enjoy pontificating. (That’s for Abscate).
I’m gonna throw it out again, and this only bears fruit to those in New England, but our 8th annual pig roast is on for OCT 9. Any one feeling froggy about these parts, c’mon! _________________ You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. I think Jay has a good handle on prices, he does know how to sniff out a good value. Now, I don’t know how many he’s walked away from, but he’s smart and knows what it what, and most importantly, what it is worth to him.
We have to move and soon. The housing market in the northeast is dumber than the VW market. The lady and I were having a “discussion” about how we are going to swing relocating with our current finances.
Me “Well, there’s the bus…”
Her “That’s not worth anything. What you gonna do, cover the cost of the U Haul?. You. Are. High.”
<Maine is 420 legal, but I don’t>
Me <hurt look> “it’s worth more than that!”
So, we had a little friendly wager (might have involved carnal favors, I’ll never tell). If 3 people showed interest in a week, I win, if not, I’m doing dishes for a long time… I called my son, had him pick a number between 1-10, took that number, added 3 zeros to it, put on the windshield and parked it at the end of the drive. $7k or $2k higher than the number Jay and I batted about when working on the gas tank issue. There’s not a straight panel on it. It has mud in a few places. The paint is already peeling. It’s running, driving, and legal, but it isn’t “nice.”
I’m not doing the dishes. 11 people in 6 hours. 1 is coming back tomorrow, another on Tuesday. Will see if they show. Do I want to sell it? Nope. But I don’t want another winter without water so if the price is right… _________________ 1979 Transporter (sold)
