PostPosted: Tue Jun 24, 2008 11:48 pm    Post subject: air bags on a VW? Reply with quote

I'm looking into air bags for this car. I got it with the front lowered a bit, and I need to bring the back down a notch or so to level it out, but I'd ultimately like to bag it. anybody know of kits or something for these cars? I don't think I'll do it if I have to engineer the whole new suspension myself - I'm not patient enough for that.

any info? thanks

Except he said he didn't want to do enineering (a lot of work) and that system requires welding Rolling Eyes Not what I'd recommend.

#2901 1949-1968 Type 1 & 3 Rear BOLT ON Air ride kit

We just made it simpler to make your kit. First select the options you would like with this kit on the right and add it to your cart. Then type in your billing and shipping information and it will give you shipping options depending on how fast you want it there. Please understand, these kits are made to order so please be patient.
This kit fits all 1955-1968 type 1 beetle's and Ghia's. If your ride is already done and you want air ride still, Our bolt on kit is what you need. It can handle the power you want to throw at it as well. You will need to drill 10 holes in the factory spring plates as well as notch them to allow the car to get down as low as possible. Bolt on design allows you to completely install in in less than a day.

"Pic 1" Heater tubes need modifying with this kit.

Here are some links to some kits we installed."Kit 1" "kit 2" "kit 3" "kit 4"

Here is a you tube "video" on the lift of this kit.

This kit is designed for higher horse power car but can even work for the 25HP. On split cars, custom shock mounts are needed. Not included in the kit but are recommended to purchase are the polyurethane spring plate bushings made by EMPI or Bug Pack. This kit can work with a narrowed(shortened) or lifted transmission as well. Slight mods needed.

The kit contains the following; 2 bags, 2 shocks, 2 lower bag mounts(Laser cut, bent and welded), 1 upper cradle(this goes under the transmission, jig welded for accuracy), upper cross member, hardware, fittings & templates. This kit is slightly higher in price due to the labor involves in welding. Each kit is made to order.

this kit is only bags in the back, and monroe style air shocks in the front. not a good set up. I would buy the DDB kit from Fye

Like I said before, I was just trying to give some options. I would definitely prefer to have front and back bags as well.

cool thanks for the sources - does anybody have any pros on the welded kits? not just cons? just curious.

VWFYE - I'd love to jump on that, but I just can't right now. my shop is being sold (I think) so I'll have to wait till the dust clears after that. thanks for the offer though.

I had on clue DDB made a bolt on kit - for that matter anybody! I'm glad it exists. I don't mind welding, but I do fear 'engineering'. I didn't want to have to make new arms and remove the stock tension rods and start experimenting. Shocked

i would imagine that if you check the DDB website, or ask, they probably have instructions that come with the kit. They may or may not provide you with instructions without buying the kit, but I wouldn't, just to protect my R&D investment

I expect that this is a pretty well engineered kit, much more so than the other "kit" available from a different supplier using shocks instead of bags. That video looks great. If I had a type 3 and the cash to do so, i would by the ddb Kit that vwfye is selling
