Hello,
An 9/16 wrench on a"made in China" part? Humm?. OK....
And, Do you really have a (PPE) Covid face mask on?
You're alone, outside. In the wind....
You've got to be fucking kidding me.
Well, at least. You didn't take the doors off the bus to install the mirrors. I've got to give you a plus for that, this time..... |

failed
I do not see the plastic washer VW #311857543 below the mirror to protect the door paint:
see 082-00 part 12: http://www.michaelknappmann.de/bulli/michaelk/vw_bus_d/fiche/t208200.html
Before mounting it, a little bit of grease or cavity protection putting inside the door hole would be a good idea.
It's strange how people today require a video for every simple task not only in this case... it looks like I'm getting old

I guess these are only reproductions - and not original VW?
(originals have a VW sign and part number at the nut to the door side - only visible if unmounted).
Only as an idea (never had this issue):
have you tried to put an extra washers (soft metal, nylon, plastic) below the nut to get some more friction drag?
In the original there is a metal spring inside to get this friction drag. _________________ Rolf-Stephan Badura

Hello,
If what rsbadura said wasn't the problem. And, we are both getting old Stephen...
If the mirror won't stay in place on the arm and you have too readjust it to see(mirror loose on arm) as I understood the issue. You will have to remove the glass from the housing and tighten the nut too increase the pressure.
Here are some pictures of whats behind the glass
You need to tighten up the ball and socket joint/connection. Ignore the drivers side note on the mirror housing(they will fit any side) it was to written in reference too the arms which are directional. |

Thanks Angus - yes that's the problem. I wonder if pulling and turning the mirror could possibly tighten the nut without removing the glass? They are re-pops but in good shape. It just annoys my how loose they are. Not sure how easy or wise it would be to try to remove and replace the glass. _________________ 1977 Westfalia - October 2015 - Current

Hello,
You may give that a try.
But, I should have posted more pictures....
The stud that makes up the connection is squared off at the base keeping the cupped part of the ball and socket from moving.
It's not hard to cut the outer edge of the mirrors seal/gasket. And to reinstall mirror use vinyl caulking compound not silicone(it's easier to clean up). And, if you do happen to break the glass, a glass shop can cut a piece to fit. It only cost me $4 each to have new glass cut too size.
Good luck with the project.
I'd rather fix an OEM part than buy aftermarket parts....that's just the way I am. |
