So sad hearing that Ray has decided to offload Delilah.. Kindof a flashback to the sale of LT's '57 just as it was ready to be enjoyed.

Ray should not be ashamed of the price he asked for, looking at the other stratos silver Oval for sale here, it was a bargain. Aside from the fabled VW 38/6, I don't think I have seen a more impressing VW restoration documented. Good luck to both old and new owner!

First update: When I saw "Delilah" in person for the first time she took my breath away......the color was spot on for L227 Strato Silver and even my friend I took with me who I consider an expert having worked for one of the well known VW restoration shops for many years, commented that it was the correct hue for Strato Silver & commented he has seen many Strato Silver cars look too bluish. The car was put together well at this stage & really looked great in sunlight. Now Ray was telling me that he has been looking for a correct 53-54 Hood since he first started this project & fitted a later 4 tab hood meanwhile until he could locate the correct hood................So I told him "Delilah" was destined for me because I just happened to have a 53-54, 5 bolt, triangle 4 Tab hood stashed that needed a little work. Well we both agreed that F & J in Downey would repair & paint "Delilah's" new correct hood, since they were the ones that gave it it's Strato Silver luster paint job already....a perfect match!!

So this morning I meet Ray at F & J and meet the body shop crew and give them "Delilah's" new Bonnet to work there magic on it!!!!

Those guys kick-ass. They used to race this green oval back when Irwindale on thursday nights first reopened in the early 2000s

It was like stepping back in time for me when I walked into F & J's body shop. It took me back to my buddys Dads body shop for 4J motors (before Nick Alexanders VW) in Huntington Park late 70's early 80's.....Convertibles, Oval Rags, fenders, doors, pans, in primer all being worked on. It was cool to see a younger Generation than me working their craft on VW's. I can't wait to see how "Delilah's" 54 hood comes out after repair/paint.

Thanks, Rich's 50.......... & Ray is a stand up guy & whatever the reason he needed to sell it (I've been there before) I'm fortunate that I was able to pick it up & continue the build.

Update: So the batwing steering wheel that Ray repaired and documented here was done very well. I just needed some light sanding to get it ready for it's color. Now the color matching was a little tricky because Ray had powder coated the steering column, e-brake, shifter already and I needed to match the steering wheel (it was in primer when I got it from Ray) to the rest of the pieces. Lucky for me my 25+ years with Mercedes-Benz factory and Mercedes-Benz Classic Center (the factory restoration shop for 300SL Gullwings and other classic MB's) and my connection to the Petersen Automotive Museum, I was able to make a go at doing the rest of the wheel restoration as I observed and knew the process of how classic Mercedes-Benz and Porsche wheels are done.

I also have my wheels done for my 55 Vert..one is a recasted wheel from the leading VW steering wheel restoration shops (I need to paint that one correct for my Congo green 55 Vert L75 Lt Beige) and I located & repaired and finished another wheel after doing a nice job on Delilhia's to see if I could do another one. (you can see the slight variations in colors)

Since getting back in to the Aircooled scene a year & half ago I went crazy and bought three Vintage VDubs...........So I have 3 projects going on at one time. I should have calmed down and bought one and focused on it, but nevertheless progress on "Delilah" is coming along.
Here are some pics of the 1954 3 Fold getting the headliner & carpet done at Collins Trim in Downey. I picked Tom & his crew because of the work I have seen come out of his place, especially the Early Oval Verts (I wanted to see his method of work before I get my 1955 Convertible done with him). It was cool talking to him and finding out we knew a lot of the same VW guys & one of my old bosses Gary from Unique Performance in the 80's. Tom would buy tons of engine hard parts off of for his engine building back in the day.

Here are some pics & she is coming along. I hope to have her done by the next 80s LA VW Nostalgic cruise.

Bringing that Wolfsburg crest back to life in the last photo!

I'm amazed at this journey and I'm embarking on my own with my '57.
