Lots of people seem to be doing 8 coats and wetsanding every 2 so i figured I would do that mix it 50/50 with mineral spirits... Then I got a little farther and some people were disagreeing with the 8 coats and some were doing 2 coats and some people were just all over the board.. So before I start my quest for a new paint job I just had a few questions..
1. What would be the optimum amount of coats since there seems to be much debate?
2. I am planning on just sanding down the old paint a bit and bondoing up the rust holes, but I was curious as to what grit sand paper to use to do that? 400-600 was what i was thinking but i may be wrong.
3. HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN! _________________ 73 Rusty Beige Microbus

I think a 50/50 with mineral spirits may make it too thin. The amount of coats will be determined by the mix of mineral spirits with the paint - the more mineral spirits the more coats it will take to cover the old paint.
400 grit sand paper will do fine for the old paint. 600 or even 800 for the in between coats. Be careful around the edges of the doors and such as the paint will be very thin and you will sand through the color easily. _________________ Joey

I did four coats on mine. I used rustoleum (tremclad) gloss almond. I diluted about 65% paint 35% mineral spirits. Laid down incredibly smoothly. After two coats I did some sanding with 600. Then once the last two coats were on, I waited 1 week and did a light sand w/ a wet sand sponge before polishing and then waxing. When mine was done it looked just like pheall's.

I am amazed by this post because I know that hard work has its rewards, and I've taken some easy jobs and turned them into ordeals. But painting a car, let alone a Bay, with a roller, sounds like a project that a speed freak might dream up. Way too much mind numbing sanding. Anyways, Pip, Pip.... Cheerio....Keep up the good work..... |

Here is an update of my '73 that I painted with Rustoleum. Ill agree that it was a long process to paint a huge Bus with Rustoleum, but I wanted to challenge myself to see if it would work. The end results is that it looks good. The touchup is easy to do and the paint is very durable. Here is my Bus at a few local car shows. You will see the old couple in the back of the Bus. I was going to put them in there just for Halloween, but I decided to leave them in there year round. Their bodies are made of super hero stuffed animals that I dressed up into an old couple.

You should pose them in a make-out pose sometime. I bet it would really make people look twice! _________________ '71 Westfalia |

Exactly how meticulous must one be when prepping for a paint job? I've been spending dozens and dozens out hours fixing tiny little things like these. Tiny little imperfections. I'm just trying to determine if this is 100% necessary when rolling the paint, opposed to the spray method. Am I wasting my time?

Yeah they're hideous but why get rid of them if they deter theft or just plain keep people away from the Bus? Plus you can use one for the carpool lane. _________________ 1970 Westfalia w/ Adventurewagen Top |

Skid's right. It does depend. The more prep the more pro it looks. I can tell you from experience that you will never be satisfied with your end result.
You will expect it to look professional and you will notice every flaw.
but so far my only regret is not putting body filler on the places I sanded it down other than that, the few drips here and there and paint that got on things that it should not have only I seemed to notice those.
Most folks just caress the bus and are just baffled its roll on Rustoleum from the hardware store.
It seems super obvious but start at the top and work your way down. Most of my repairs were on the bottom half so I started there and man it made my life a pain in the ass on the tail end.
The top seemed easier to spray than to roll on. Too many tiny crevices Like seriously how are you suppose to roll on the paint on the vents and rails? The parts that were rolled on turned out better The spray left a not such a smooth gloss like the roll on part after sanding.
The top of mine was a color you can get in a can along with the quarts.
Its holding up okay so far.
Decide. Are you just trying to make a nice looking car or are you going to try and enter it in a car show.
Its funny at first I would notice every flaw, now I hardly even see them. Maybe its all the good feedback I have gotten.
Of course maybe its like a Tattoo. Seriously what are folks going to say when you proudly say " I painted it myself, with a roller!"

I did the almond on top and a custom color on the bottom.
I tried to do a lighter version of the avocado green so I would not have to paint the inside.
I wish I could say I was cool and measured out my portions but I just mixed a gallon of it.
I used Hunter Green, Red, white, and Yellow. |
Can you give some what of an estimate for each colored used. That's the color I want. 70% green, 20% white, 5% red, 5% yellow??? Experimentation sucks. I'm afraid I'll get baby shit green. _________________ 1970 Westfalia w/ Adventurewagen Top |

I can not for the life of me. But what i did was get one of those cough syrup caps and made my recipe small to get the ratios then i made a bunch that way I did not waste all my paint.
I think is was 2 parts green 1 part yellow and 1 part red and white until I liked the lightness. But I am remembering that i used more yellow than Red?
Man sorry. But just mix a little batch and track your portions you'll get it. _________________ 67 Bug ( totaled but now being rebuilt!)
