My 1967 21 window bus came (to me) with only the drivers mirror, a big square industrial looking MONSTER. My 61 double cab has the small round mirrors that I really prefer... or should I go with dual elephant ears?

Need to decide soon, bus is at the painters and now's the time to do the hinge change out.

Interested in hearing input...

Since you have your 21 on a rotisserie don't go with any of the options mentioned before me.
Go with either NOS original VW round mirrors or the cleanest original set you can find.
And yes, you'll need mirros for both sides....

No other options in my opinion as they are the best you can find/buy.

Good luck!!

Somebody needs to go edit the 67 Owner's manual then:

Interesting, I took a look at the press releases and found a 67 with a round on the drivers side and an elephant on the passengers side... now I'm really confused.

THESE CATS ARE THE COOLEST, EH?

Thanks to all for the input, I'm leaning more and more towards round on both sides...

You can change them at any time. I just changed my 21-Window from messed up square mirrors to round mirrors. Pull out mirror arms, insert new mirror arms.

I like the round mirror look.

Thanks all, now here's a twist... my passenger side has NO mirror post, just a standard hinge pin (button top). Is it possible VW delivered Sambas with a drivers mirror only?

That's my main concern for the paint shop issue, need to modify this hinge and would rather do that "push-pull-hammer" thing prior to paint.

Thanks again for all the input.

I have seen quite a few buses with only a drivers side mirror. Hell my buddy's son just got a beetle with no mirror on either side.

I also have a cab from a single cab that has a driver side arm on both sides and there both og turkis.

It was common in those days for passenger side mirrors to be optional. (which seems ridiculous to me, but...) I don't know if VW subscribed to the practice or not.

Anyway, I recommend setting up your bus for 2 mirrors of your choice. Like Everett said, you can easily change the style anytime if you want. The VWOA elephant ears were certainly common, and possibly were installed as standard items on later US buses, but I don't know when they came into vogue. I do prefer the look of the round ones, but they are pretty small, so harder to adjust and not as effective as the bigger ones. Fortunately, the outward visibility is so good on a bus (esp. a 21-window!) that mirrors aren't too critical.

I think I remembered that passenger side mirrors were standard on buses starting in '66. Stock would have been small round ones, options were elephant ear, truck mirror, or harp mirrors.

Yes, the passenger mirrors were often an option.

I understand what you mean now - you want to get the hinges sorted before paint so you don't screw things up if anything is rusted or frozen in place. This makes perfect sense.

So free up the hinge pins now, then you can get it out without a battle later if you decide on something different.

Somebody needs to go edit the 67 Owner's manual then:

what does the owner manual have to do with that i bet it show several dealer installed options in it
just cause they are dealer installed does not mean they didn;t come from vw
with so many mirror options vw left it up to the dealer or customer which mirror they wanted on the car

So, who makes a passenger mirror that you can actually adjust properly?
I can't see my blind side.

I seem to remember my first bus('67) having a longer passenger side arm. All repos I've seen have the same length arm.
