Whatever motor you have, what kind of gas mileage do you see with reasonable driving habits? _________________ 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle - Daily Driver/Rolling Project Beater - Stock w/ GT Style Exhaust

I have a 1600 singleport. I drive to work on Friday (100 miles at 55-60mph) and then bomb around town on the weekend. This cycle happens two weekends in a row. I average 28mpg. |

I got a stock 1600 dp on a 74 super, with the only mods are a blue coil, and stinger exhaust. I also have an 009 dizzy on it, and i get 30-30.5 mpg city. i drive normally, and always cruise at around 50mph, and never "floor it" when i get to a hill, or green light. You would believe it, but my mileage drops to about 25-26 when i haven't changed my oil, and it gets black and nasty looking. I always change my oil frequently and keep it clean. Also i rebuilt my motor a few years ago, and its not leaking a drop of oil.
And i'm not sure if this helps any, but i have no rear decklid. So i never have any problems with cooling. the engine always stays nice and cool, and runs perfect. _________________ 1974 Super Beetle: Custom resto in progress

I have a 2007 cc, FI / Turbo '73 Ghia, and have only run 110 octane race gas in it. I have no idea what the MPG is, but damn it's fun.

I just spent a couple hours going through a bunch of these old MPG threads. I am amazed at how much interest there has been in this subject over the years. I am also surprised at the wide variation in people's mileage results. It seems that there really is no magic formula for better fuel economy. Some engines are good and some not so much.
This is a subject that has held my interest as long as I have owned a car, much more so now that I am on a fixed income and the fuel suppliers are quite obviously not! Stretching my travel dollar is becoming paramount!
In the summer we very much enjoy taking our open bodied Manx clone on extended road trips especially through the mountain passes. It's an unparalleled way to see this great planet we live on! However... our Jetta gets 62 mpg and our 944 gets 35 mpg so it is getting harder and harder to justify taking the Buggy which only gets in the high 20's at best!
I built this engine with the goal in mind to have enough power to stay at the posted speed limits without unduly holding up traffic and at the same time get the best fuel economy possible. I accomplished the first goal nicely but the second has been elusive to say the least.
The specs on the engine are:
66mm x 96mm for 1911cc
crank trigger ignition, 10* initial, 31* total with 10* light cruise additional advance
very mild Web cam
stock 1700 heads opened up a bit to keep the CR down to 8.4/1 for 87 octane fuel
Dual IDFs, tuned mid 13 AFR under power, 15.5 - 16 AFR at cruise
Stock '67 swing axle gearing and 24" tall rear rubber.
3000 rpm at 60 mph
Drum brakes all around properly adjusted.
car weighs 1,432 pounds
The best mileage so far is 29.9 mpg (Imperial gallons), normally it's around 26 - 28 mpg. My gut feeling is that a car that light should get 35 mpg. I seem to have hit the wall on any further gains. Perhaps the larger displacement is the problem or is it the type 4 combustion chamber shape combined with the 96mm bore? _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. Not mine. A customer of mine.
1974 Sparkäfer with a 4,125 transmission.
1600 engine with a 2280 cam, heads by me, 9-1 CR (for 98 octane Euro fuel) CB center section, 34 Solex with 28 mm venturi. VS sport muffler.
40 mpg @ 90 kmh cruise.
29,6 mpg @ 120 kmh (75 mph)
Another customer has a 1974 Super beetle (1303) with a 3,88/ 0,89 transmission. 1914 stocker plus with SS pistons. Raptor 0608 camshaft (240 @ 0,050" ) 37,5 x 33 mm valves. 10,5 CR. 37 mm RMB Solex, CB Black box on a locked 009. CSP Super comp exhaust. 106 hp. Does a solid 32,5 mpg @ 75 mph. and 29-30 mpg around town, Unless he is on the loud pedal all the time. _________________ https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=435993 |

That’s awesome numbers on a 1600. I’m rebuilding a 1600 with 2280 and heads from mr Lundgren. We all need to see more mpg in this days … |

MPG is more than just the engine or what R&P gear you use. Aerodynamics are huge. MPG suffers badly when driving anything faster than 55-60 MPH.
Way back in the late 1980 when my 73 Bug was less than 8 years old I remember getting 33-34 MPG on a road trip driving 50-55 MPH. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

If people would just do decent builds/rebuilds instead of slapping together what happens to be on sale that week AND actually get their engines dialed in afterwards, 70% of the vehicles out there, VW´s or V8´s could improve drasticly on fuel efficiency.
When we get cars in for tuning and/or tune ups on the dyno we calculate with 6 out of 10 being "horrible" and need quite a bit of work. 3 out of 10 being fair, and 1 out of 10 being so good that we can only do minor improvements if any.
I remeber one Chevelle with a stroker engine, (393, - 396, something like that) where the owner thought it was pretty good as was My colleague found another 102 hp in it! plus 2,6 mpg on cruise. I kid you not.
Dave also has a point. Choice of wheels, proper alignment, choice of both gear- and engine oil etc etc and of course speed has an impact. But a properly set up type 1 with a not too agressive or too big engine should relatively easy be able to be tuned to do 28 mpg on a 75 mph cruise.
But, I will give you this much. Getting an engine into a proper tune has not gotten easier over the years since we are basicly stuck with shitty Weber style carbs for the tuning world. They can be quite the handfull to get right even for an experienced tuner. I/we have been pulling the leg of one of the bChinese factories which make one of the better copies to make a "deluxe" version of the IDF with a 5th progression hole, and possibly a Tri jet function, which could, and would make us capable of jetting them as good as old Italian Dellorto carbs. The Tri jet is most likely not happening, but the 5th progression hole could end up happening. That´s at least a step of the way. _________________ https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=435993 |

1970 baywindow westfalia pop-top, 2276, Ida’s and built 091 box with 215/60 15 rear wheels: I’ll get 20-22 mpg on a long trip, in town however it’s terrible and I’ve not worked it out 🤣 but you don’t have an ida motor if economy is your primary goal |
