I was reading a post entitled "location of stickers" which talked about a sticker that warned about driving with the pop-top open. This got me thinking, how many people on here have ever driven away with the pop-top open, and how far did you get, or did disaster strike? Post your pop-top open stories! I've driven out of campgrounds at least twice with the top up and have seen other Westy's do this same thing! |

One of the very first questions I asked the PO when I was inspecting Helga, is if it was ever a good idea to drive a short distance with the top down so the insides could be aired out. NEVER!!!! was their (husband and wife) answer.
That was seven years ago...and Ive never have but Im tempted to especially if the top is up in the rain and I want it to dry quickly.
Im interested in the replys.
Thankx Kevin for posting the poll. |

Oh.. wait... i thought this was the Bay Window forum.

Anyway... are you kidding me? _________________ Glenn

Glenn,
postmodern absurd theater has been done ("Waiting for Godot", et al); though the overt recursiveness of your response lends a poetic quality to your comment, it remains nonetheless a paradigm of language as a surreal engagement which invokes the Derridean principle of deconstruction at its most extreme, and most destructive.
Thus I ask "Are you kidding...?"
Lanval
and to the OP ~ twice for very brief moments; the longest was getting out of the parking lot at Newport Pier. I made it out to the light at the main road before a bystander waved me down and suggested I reconsider driving with the top up.

One of the few recalls for the early Vanagon Westys was for the pop-top,
Had a tendancy to open when driving.
I always make sure the "button" thing is sticking through the hole all the way.
Have it pop open on you once and you won't get sloppy about closing it again. |

He's a gradual student, after he's left school he'll graudualy forget all that and return to where the rest of us live.
Graduate students are working hard to better themselves so the odd philosophical tirade is often overlooked. |

I have had my top up in my garage (it wont fit out the door, and up i mywarehouse (same door inferference issue...
I always take the ignition key, and hang it up my the latch for the poptop...
Cheap insurance.
When I was working on heavy equipment in the 70's, I lowered the shop bay dor between the cab of the haul truck (Euclid) and the cab to keep the cold winter wind off my work area... you guessed it, I lowered the body when I was done, destroying a 16' x 16' roll up door....
Chalk it up to youth, forgetfulness and black hash. (perhaps not in that order.) |

About 150 feet one time, idling along in first gear (so maybe 2MPH) with a sharp eye out for overhead hazards. I was changing sites at a campground, the one I was in somehow acquired four inches of standing water overnight .. damn February Oregon coastal rain.
We had so much damn gear stowed in the upper bunk that was supposed to be outside that it would've taken longer to clear that out & drop the top than to actually move. Taught my wife not bring everything & the kitchen sink on a two-night trip to a state park when it'll probably rain... |

So when I first got my van I was showing her off to some friends in a strip mall parking lot. Well I go inside and come back out and get in and start going out on the highway. THATS when I heard the wind on the pop up and pulled over and put it down. You guys don't know me. _________________

Funny, I've been reading Derrida, and Paul de Man, mostly as a way of learning how the principals of deconstruction can be applied to product design (and more commonly architecture).

After my one exciting highway opening I now ALWAYS put a small strap around the folded struts EVERYTIME I close the top. |

Ok, I'll fess up - twice.
Once off a campground near Mt St Helens. Didn;t go far on the road, thought it sounded like the hatch was open (that's another story why that sound is familiar), but I did drive through the entire campground, luckily no one was up.
The 2nd time I pulled down the wire from my friends house to his garage, luckily the wire had a coil of several extra feet, so there wasn;t any damage done - well except for the chip out of the pop-top. Seal covered that!
