I just bought an 89 Vanagon that overheats. It has bubbles in the resevour. If these thngs overheat, what does it do to the motor?
Thanks |

If the pressure tank is full and the system well bled and you still get a continuous stream of bubbles into the reservoir you may have a compression leak into your cooling system. Likely caused by a cracked head or blown interior head gasket. |

Fries them..
That aluminum squirrel cage does not enjoy being run hot---
Bubbles in the expansion tank = compression leak.
It could be coming from a cracked head---bad compression ring, etc.
Get a coolant pressure tester on the expansion tank--it'll tell you right away where the leak is. _________________ T.K. |

A long shot but.....
Was the cooling system opened up (worked on) *just* before you bought it?
On my I4 conversion, there were little random bubbles coming into the expansion bottle. (the cooling system was new, and just filled up). Naturally I was worried it was air being drawn in at head etc. Turns out air introduced to the cooling system can take some time to work out.
No bubbles now.
