a gasket does not go between the backing plate and end casting. it goes between the backing plate and bearing retainer. 2 gaskets are in the kit because type 2 bus uses 2 gaskets and no big O ring. beetle uses 1 gasket and the big O ring. Confused

Ok, great thanks for the correction. Should have read my manual. Embarassed

Here's a little flash back to a previous post and I was hoping for some help. This area on my bus is gone, and I don't know how the inner-rocker
attaches to the rear cargo pillar. I know how the inner rocker attaches to the jack point but how does this pillar support weld in place?
Thanks for any help.
Right now the pillar is "floating" on my bus...LOL

The B and C pillars sit on top of the inner rocker lip as in the pic below. I did stitch welds where the two meet.

The outer rocker/strengthener fits in the B/C pillars. You have to kind of twist / turn it so the tabs fit. Hard to explain.

This is the piece I am missing. It's flat out gone! What is this called and can I order it? Thanks again...and thanks for the pic Kelly

C pillar, make sure you specify left hand drive, right side cargo door.

I found a pin sized hole on my axle shaft that is allowing tranny fluid to leak. Would it be safe to weld it up after I've drained the fluid and cleaned / dried the area? I think a 3 second zap would be all it needs.

be more worried about the nearby gas tank or grease contaminating the weld than anything else . no danger ,magic or problems with welding that up

Managed to not blow myself up....

Got the engine installed, bumpers, suspension adjusted, brakes bled, safaris installed. Took it for it's first spin around the block and my first in a bus, ran out of gas.... Embarassed (had spare gan can with me) Engine needs help, backfiring , but my mystery transmission shifted smooth, no noises, or poping out of gear. Brakes were better than I expected. Still plenty to do, but after and year and a half it's finally rolling.

Great bus!. Thanks for documenting all of this as well. I'm impressed by your workmanship. I have learned a lot from your posts.

I could not get the engine to run right; put good carb, distributor (from my nice running bug), tune up , etc. kept backfiring and lack of power. I did a compression test of the engine and here's what I found.

#1-35 psi
#2-130
#3-30
#4-115

I'm guessing 2 burnt valves, will tear down and see. Alway's something. Mad

Pulled the motor, looking at the valves, the #1 and #3 exhaust valves are about 1/2 cm below the others with the rocker arms removed. Also the valves were super tight, with a zero gap. Does this mean the valve guides are worn? Also the #1 & #3 push rods tubes were sucked in, like they had collapsed, weird? Will pull the heads tomorrow
