Maybe help the motor park correctly? Without the spring, maybe momentum would cause the motor to miss the parking location? |

Could it be that the spring is there so that when the mechanism reaches either extreme position (left/right), it gets pulled back towards the center, minimizing the load on the motor, since it would be most strained at those times... ? _________________ 1964 Type 1 Sedan |

Maybe it's to prevent chatter as the linkages wear? |

During the 12 volt (P.O. conversion) back to 6 volt conversion, I also noticed that a spring was there, but it was just hanging loose.
(I know, you're wondering why I would ever convert it back to 6 volt.) In a nut shell, cause that's the way I wanted it, but that's for another story. Besides the P.O. really messed things up.
During the R&R, I took a look at the plastic bushings on the ends of the arms. They were noticeably worn on one side with no spring attached.
IMO, the spring is installed to equalize wear on those bushings.
BTW, for those that are converting from 6 to 12 volt? ...... The motor drive pin is larger in diameter on the 12 volt unit. So even if you get a 12 volt motor, you will still need a 12 volt drive arm, cause the 6 volt drive arm will not fit.

The motor drive pin is only bigger on the early 68. 67 12 volt motor is the same size. |
