If I were them I would have pulled any un-hacked Barndoor parts plus the 36 horse, trans, VIN plates and whatever they're attached to and buried the rest under the tires again. Very few VWs are so hacked that even the wheels have been cut up. Just goes to show you how one man's trash is another one's treasure.

Id say if the VIN and title were there, done deal. snatch it up and set it aside.
Start ordering metal from gerson, and get a birth cert. find out what it WAS. then put it back. not too big a deal. probably better than starting out with some of the beat down colombians, and you have less work to do. less deconstruction.
You could even make it something cool. say a std sunroof walkthrough.
