I tried to research my question, but came up empty. Are ice pick door handles for bugs and busses interchangeable? The door handles on my '59 bus are kinda crusty and I would rather try to find nicer ones than rechrome mine, since rechroming is so expensive.

Dangit Mad ! I found a really nice NOS handle for a bug.

This now beggs the question, what are the differences? What to look for to be sure I get bus handles, not bug?

Thanks for pointing out the discrepancy, Bill. I recall seeing an icepick handle that has more of a hook on it than the straight piece shown in the photo above. Perhaps that's the kind I need. Next time I go over to where my bus is, I'll try to remember to bring a screwdriver and remove one of the handles for identification. There was an auction for a NOS icepick that's ending soon and I didnt want to miss out if it was the right one for my bus. From the looks of it, it's for a bug, so I'll pass.

I have a set of early bus icepicks for your bus with the key. they are not 100% perfect but they are pretty damn nice.

I will be bringing them to bulli brigade for sale with my other stuff.

early oval beetle handles are usable on bus. at the moment i have a bus one on my 55 oval. there is different lock cylinders, since beetle use SG code, while bus uses the D,E,F key code.
it is needed to change or reshape also the metal hook.

there are however slight differences in the shape of center casting, these do not accept all hooks.

in the last photo there are not pre 55 handles, both are 56>

here is a pre 55

we all learn new things. i never knew early beetle ever used a hook in the latch mech. so then to be clear differances for pre 55 handles are part numbers and key codes and they are interchangable?

The Bus icepick handles have 2 different hooks for the no-recess and recess front doors too.

This is the recess where the door handle mounts.

Old thread alert! Will the lock interchange with a bus handle? The wafers maybe?
