hi guys i have a 1968 beetle with swing axel and i noticed the drivers side has a lip for the o ring to sit on but yet the passenger doesnt and i had a o ring that was round as the diamater of the tube but it wouldnt stay on due to no lip and the o ring in the kits are to big...is it supposed to be thinner than the one i have?thanks

That's pretty weird... did it have an O-ring when you disassembled it?
It might have had the pre-1967(I think) axle tube retainer. Those had paper gaskets and no O-ring I believe, why you have a mix I wouldn't know.
When re-assembling, make sure you use enough gaskets (paper or hard gaskets) to ensure the axle tube has enough free-play to move freely (but not too much till there's excessive axle play). |

No O ring goes there.
Just 3 gaskets for sealing.
the O ring you have in the kit is for the transmission side cover. |

rterfert : Mine has the O rings on there. There were years they changed the type of paper they used for the gasket and whether there was an O-ring or not. |

I haven't done a swing in a few months or better, no o ring on the one I did last.(1967 long axle tube)
Here is a picture diagram (shows an O ring #4)
I can't say I have ever put one back in that location (Just 3 red gaskets)
#27 in this picture is what I was refering to

I've never seen a gasket set that included that O-ring. Even in Mexico where virtually all cars have it. _________________

Bruce : Yeah, I had to bring my old one down to a store and then had them match and give me a suitable one. Was cheap though, ended up paying like $2 for one. |

That's what you have to do.
Last time I was in Mexico, I asked one of the trans builders where they get them, and he said they are available separately from the dealer. Then he gave me a handful _________________
