|
|
Hi, I've got a '91 Vanagon Carat. My shifter broke off at the bushing, and I'm looking for a new one. Anyone know of an online retailer that still carries these? Also, was a solid-metal lever (rather than hollow) ever made to fit the Vanagon? I haven't taken apart the whole assembly, so maybe it's got to be hollow, but seems like it's just asking for trouble. If I had a forge around, I'd just bang one out. I already hit all the salvage yards here in El Paso, TX with no luck at all. Any help would be much appreciated. Even a part number on the damn thing would be helpful right now.
Thanks,
James |

They don't break often but it happens. The break occurs at the small hole for the setscrew. Some people put a splint inside and then weld it back to one piece, grinding the weld smooth. The outer diameter needs to stay the same so the parts can slide down past the repair.
The part number is 251 711 121E.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably end up welding the piece, which is what I would have done already if I had a rig here. This also means I'll have to scrape off the Gorilla Glue I'd used for a temporary fix. Never fun.
I do have the Bentley manual, but I don't see how it would be helpful at this point. When I'm in the dis-/re-assembly step, I'm sure it will come in handy.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I'm going to weld it today, and I hope the effort is successful. If not, it's good to know I have options.
