I am having an issue with my headlights. I have replaced the ignition switch and installed headlight realy ugrades. Next i a going to switch the head light switch its self, it seems tight, I am curious though to what part need to be repalced for the high and low beams. The only work when I keep the brites pulled back manually. Do I need this part? Obviously the piece that inside it was worn out.

With my van the key needs to be turned on for the lights to work, with the key off they behave just as you describe.

When I installed my relay upgrade i thought the same thing.

Yeah its wierd, my van was sitting for a bit like 2 weeks and when I started it the light came on, but then went out. I dont know if this is realted but I did smoke tail lights, new side markers, and turn signals. Only the driver side front running light and rear running light work with the switch engaged. When the flashers are on the reds on both side work and so does the passenger side turn signal, but the drivers side doesnt blink just stays on. This really my first gremlin I've run into...
Also when i turn on the turn signal to the left a buzzing noise come from the fuse box, but no blown fuses... Weird ... My uncle is gonna fuss with it this weekend, I gave up for the time being...

I havent had time to touch my van in like 10 days.. Unfortunately. I going to change the wiper lever which controls the dimmer. I'm also switching in dimmer lever with cuise control. No clue yet to as whats going on with the signals and running lights yet.

I'm not sure about your headlights, but I found out something about the turn signal bulbs when I replaced mine. The fronts have two filiments in them, one for running and one for turns. It matters which way you install the bulbs to get them to blink properly. If one's not working, try taking it out and turnig it 180 before reinserting.

I had something that sounds similar - lights would not work at all except when I pulled back on the dimmer switch. I pulled the steering wheel, cleaned the contact ring inside, put a little dielectric grease on it and it put it back together - Lights again Laughing! I think the dimmer switch may be going, but this worked for now.

When the headlights go out for any reason, always check the ground connection at the grounding star above the fuse panel, to the left on the body under the dash. VW actually overloaded the headlight ground here--the best fix is to ground each headlight AT the headlight mounting.
