I have just gotten a tachometer for my vanagon with an MK3 from a 97 Jetta, just trying to figure out what pin is for the tach, does anyone know?
Thank you and have a great day! ?:
OR can I just attatch it to the coil? If so, what color should the wire be?

My Jetta install is an OBD1 ABA.
The tach from my '94 Jetta cluster (removed) worked with signal from 22/68 from the ECU or 1 from the coil. (got that info from the Vortex. Hint hint ) With either wire, it was a little "jumpy" at idle (like vibrated a *little*).
I'm not sure if tach needs to be used in conjunction with the Jetta cluster.
Please post if you get the same results or an improvement using the tach with the Mk3 cluster.
A quick look at Bentley and things look much different for OBD2. I don't see a 1 in the fuse/relay box portion of diagram. Have a look. If you find 1, trace it back to the ECU. This may give you the wire.
But.....
1 from the coil might work too. For my Vanagon hi/low pressure oil warning unit I installed, I needed to connect to 1 of the coil. Pics below of added wire to Jetta coil. If you add a wire, use a spade type connector. I used a ring. It's possible your coil has the leads shown in the pics soldered in place. Don't know how you'd deal with that.
On my Jetta tach, there are 4 pins. IIRC, 15 is on one end of the row of 3 pins, - is middle and 1 is the other end. The top 4th pin may be for illumination.
Neil.

My engine is an OBD II, It is a 2.8 liter from a 1997 jetta. I have all the wires on the harness, just wanting to know what one is for the tach. I have been searching samba and vwvortex, but am finding nothing in the way of a diagram, or a wire color for my specific engine. |

No, I don't have a bentley guide. Was hoping I wouldn't need it to just hook up a tach, was also told that it might not even have the pin info I need in it. |

IMHO, totally worthwhile getting.
And my bad. Shoulda known from your sig what engine you had!
The 2.8 VR6 ignition coil setup is quite different. From Bentley: ".... three double ended coils within one housing".
Check your Pmail.

Sooooo, is it possible to connect the tach through the coil instead of the ECU??
there is only 1 connector on my coil, does anyone know what color the wire should be where I connect in? |

I think it has to come from the ecu. I ended up buying a 6 to 4 cyl tach converter to use the stock one. |
