Well this is pretty much the last of the metal fabrication on this unit.
Dave came up with a pretty neat way to tie everything together. The beauty of fabrication. No restrictions, no limitations.
He has the shock towers tied together and fabed up some hoops to tie into the wish bone.
With the spare tire part of the fiberglass removed you get a neat up top perspective. This area will be glassed back in a similar fashion as the other side.
A piece of fiberglass in between the plates to get the spacing correct for the next step.
Then some down bars were added to tie into the shock tower bar.
All tied together to complete and compliment the entire cage.

Right on. Nice and light. Very innovative attachment to the frame horns. I may adapt that idea for my lower engine cage/skid plate attachment. 1" tube, right?
I am hung up on not wanting the cage to "trap" the FG body anywhere, as I see that as a squeak/rattle/crack generator. How do you, or do you, plan to isolate the body from the cage? |

Yes 1" .120 wall DOM.
With the plate system we are both using so far on my car there is no squeaking at all. The .500" dowel in the center takes all the force and keeps true alignment of the bars on either side. I did have my doubts at first.
Here is the plate system if you missed it in my build up..
With the plate bolted into place.......
Then the bars are welded to the plates..
Another way that Jeff AKA GS Guy posted was to drill a hole through and do a system like this.
No sandwiching with this method but not water tight. _________________ Brent

Dave is on the final stretch.... for this year. He hot wired the car on Friday to hear it run again, got the itch and drove it around the block Saturday to get a feel for what it will be like with all the changes done. Was a slow ride, back ally full of slush and no brakes to boot. He did say no more squeaking was heard from the body/frame flex like before. I just can't wait till he can get it up to speed to see fully what he has created. If it's anything like mine and I'm sure it will be it's going to be a little pocket rocket.
He has been busy this weekend. The back of the car is wired (Painless harness). GM steering column wired, all that is left is the front of the car and dash to be wired. He might bite the bullet and go with all new gages. New steering wheel installed, horn installed and operational. brake reservoir is installed and front brakes are bled. Back don't seem to want to cooperate, might just need more bleeding.
3rd brake light is off of a canopy. Fished a wire into the bar and used double sided sticky tape to fasten in place.
The light looks great and is damn bright. The picture does it no justice. A great addition to the buggy.
Dave has to upholster the back deck cover yet and get his stereo installed. I'm sure there are a number of things yet to be done but the end is getting near. _________________ Brent

I like the access he has in that hood, is that custom? What kind of fasteners is he using?
How great would it be to have a nieghbor like you two have in each other?
"Dude, help me flip my buggy tonight to weld the floor in?
"Sure thing, can I borrow a spool of .35? I'm out and need to weld a brace...."
Not happening in my 'hood...... _________________ Gary

The hood was like this when he bought the body. It has a flange on the top side and slides into place. The front is held down by hood pins. Not sure if this was "factory" with this body or not . The back side of the hood has been reinforced. Could have been done after.
We do have it pretty good. We enjoy each others company. We go offroading together, camping together, I would give him the shirt off my back and I know the feeling is mutual. We have rescued each other with tow ropes on and off road . Watched each others pets when gone for holidays. It's all good.
I haven't told him yet we are looking at a new house...Kidding Dave, just kidding.
If the house between us ever goes up for sale Dave and I are going to buy it and make a garage three lots wide. _________________ Brent

Well looky looky! Her maiden voyage to a local VW car show. Dave is super happy with the handling characteristics of the car, solid as a rock and predictable. If you remember this car was a SHAKER at speed. It's all gone now. No more body creeking and she actually holds the road.
Just a few shots off of the local club page. I really need to get some pictures of the deck cover Dave did. A real work of art!
Early to the car show, not everyone has arrived yet.
I'll get some more completed pictures and post them soon. _________________ Brent

What kind of front turn signals has he got? Looks to be some type of strip light? I really like the way it turned out. The black and red go together. It is the best "Rat Rod" looking buggy that I have seen. |

I got some completed pictures taken..........
Some photo trickery to show the LED front lights. The parking lights are somewhat visible during the day, the turn signals are super bright. At night time it's going to look sick! And I mean that in a good way
Dave made his own dash out of fiberglass. He had a steel one previously.
All VDO gauges. Tilt steering using a GM steering column. Lockable steering column and self canceling turn signals, I'm jealous.
Tank is in the back and has been nicely hidden. Again some of Daves handy work.
With some nice storage on either side.
