e-Brake cable?

How do I remove the e-brake cable from my backing plate? Do I have to loosen off both nuts on the hand lever and pull it out from the inside of the drum. I have the shoes out and now all that is holding the backing plate is the cable.

Yes, you do, you also have to remove the 13 mm nut that holds it in the backing plate, usually its covered with seam sealer, scrape that off first.
