My car has stock Type 3 rear brakes. Here is the shopping list as I remember it:
- Axles. I bought Sway-A-Ways because at the time I was building a drag car. For the street you can probably get away with stock axles from a '61-'66 Bug. I have a pair sitting in my garage if you're interested.
- Axle housings. I bought a kit from CB Performance that comes with both long and short housings. I had my engine builder (R.I.P. Robbie) swap the short housings over. Again, if you can come up with a good used set from a '61-'66 Bug you're in good shape.
- Bearing caps. These you'll have to find used and they are specific to '65-'66 Bugs. I have an extra pair that I might be willing to part with since my setup is now complete.
- Hubs. OEM hubs are probably better but I used new hubs that I purchased from CIP1. You have to have to have at a bare minimum .625" (5/8" for you fraction junkies out there) from the outer surface where the axle nut seats. I say "bare minimum" because I had a machine shop take .625" off and I was only barely able to get the axle nuts on far enough to sneak a small cotter pin in there. It might be an issue with the aftermarket axles.
The rest of the parts are either Type 3 specific (backing plates, brake shoes, hardware, drums, e-brake cables) or are universal (axle nuts, bearings, seal kits, etc.)
Good luck, and let me know if you're interested in those axles or bearing caps.

For the type 3 parts, I have good swing axle drums and hubs, but I don't have the backing plates....
Can type 3 IRS brake parts be used for this?
Thanks again guys... |

HELP PL:EASE a few have already told me a few things but IM still lost. I can do what Im told but just having a hard time finding out the right thing to do. I have a type 1 short axle trans and I went to put my type 3 drums " 2 peice " with brakes and backing plates on. Everything seemed to work good untill I go to put the drum on, its out about 1/2 or 9/16 " some say " but then I read never to take material off the inside of the drum so how do I get the drum to move inward like I need?

From what I see in the picture, you don't have the hub on and the drum still doesn't touch the backing plate? Can the drum turn? Is it touching the pads? does it look like it is rubbing on the lip of the backing plate?
And the snout of the hub will need 9/16 taken ,off if it hasn't been done already so the axle nut can go on and get the cotter pin in. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. More pictures please. What bearing covers are you using? The machine work you do on the snout of the hub has no effect on the relationship between the drum and the backing plate.

I'll have to look at my spare parts but I believe you do use the Bug bearing covers as part of the conversion.

I have type 3 backing plates brakes and drums the rest of the parts are bug parts " inside the drum bearing and spacer " the nut seems that it will fit fine but the drum just needs to sit back about 1/2 in. thanks Jason[/youtube] _________________ 59 bug slammed with cosmics |

(Okay, I will leave this as written since I just realized that I just linked back to the same thread I put the link into. I will also edit my "shopping list")
I went back through the thread I used to do my short axle conversion:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=327038
and according to it you have to get bearing covers (the piece that bolts on with the backing plate and holds the wheel bearing in) from a '65-'66 Bug. Apparently it is specific to those years. I have a spare pair left over from when I did my conversion. PM me and we can talk.

If I just changed the bearing cover " i dont think it would do it for me " because right now the bearing is right at the end of the cover so I must have to change the spacer that is behind the bearing also. What you think? thanks _________________ 59 bug slammed with cosmics |

The bearing affects the hub. If the drum doesn't seat on the hub than it isn't the bearing spacer.
It didnt look like the drum was going all the way back to the backing plate in the original pics. Is the drum rubbing the backing plate and not seating against the hub? _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value.
