It could be your spacer, though I reused all those pieces from my car when I did the conversion. Here are a couple images of the area in question:
If you somehow got your spacers backwards that might explain things, but then again you shouldn't be able to tighten down the bearing cap if you did.

I have a type 3 swing axle that is 4 bolt with hubs. and I would like to use the type 3 4 bolt hubs/brakes.
So I need to find:
61-6? beetle axles, tubes, and end castings (with bearings, spacers etc)
65-66 only bearing covers AND spacers?
Then I use the beetle axles
inside the type 3 axle tubes
With the type 1 end castings
using the bearings and bearing covers from
65-66 type 1
as well as type 1 axle spacers (which set of spacers: the 61-6?, or the 65-66only?)
and then button it up with
type 3 backing plates
hubs (machined 0.625" ???)
and the type 3 drums
Anyone help me see this perfectly clear? Thanks guys!
STICKY anyone? |

So I need to find:
61-6? beetle axles, tubes, and end castings - Yes, these are also available new from CB Performance, among other places
(with bearings, spacers etc) - bearings and spacers are universal
65-66 only bearing covers AND spacers? - Yes, the bearing doesn't go as far into the early end casting. the '65-'66 only bearing cover addresses this. Reuse your Type 3 spacers
Then I use the beetle axles - Yes
inside the type 3 axle tubes - You can do it this way if your Type 3 tubes are good (mine weren't.
With the type 1 end castings - Yes
using the bearings and bearing covers from 65-66 type 1, as well as type 1 axle spacers (which set of spacers: the 61-6?, or the 65-66only?) - As stated above, the bearing covers are '65-'66 specific only. The rest of the parts (bearings, spacers) are universal
and then button it up with
type 3 backing plates - Yes
hubs (machined 0.625" ???) - At least. I would consider going as far as .6875"
and the type 3 drums - Along with shoes, hardware, wheel cylinders, etc. _________________ aka Jimal

Trying to do my short axle swap with motor/trans in car...need to gain a spec of clearance on the rings that hold the axle tubes to the trans. Are the mounting bolts Russ refers to, the ones I have circled in the photo? Thanks...

its a bitch to do in the car... especially a driver that is dirty & greasy... I've done it... by unbolting the mounts and getting a jack under in place with some pressure, your giving yourself a little more room to work with the axle tube bell ends that mount to the side cover
once you pull the axles... usually the fulcrum plates are going to move around...
if it was me doing it again, I'd stop trying to save time and just pull the motor & trans

Thanks Everett & Anthony. I'm going to make one more attempt at doing it while installed...I guess I could also remove the two larger bolts that hold the crossmember to the frame horns so long as the jack was under it. If I start to feel like I'm going to pop a vessel I'll step back take a deep breath and pull everything _________________

Thanks. The kid who bought my Fasty has been keeping me updated on its progress. It has been fast and impressive. He and his father have facilities I will probably never have and are knocking this thing out quicker than I ever could have. I've seen some pictures and the doors and other panels are already painted their new VW pale blue color. I'm glad the car went to a good home.

I ended up removing the 2 large 27mm crossmember/frame horn bolts (the wrench is on them in the photo above). My jack was under the crossmember when I did this...I did nothing to the smaller bolts circled in yellow. Once removed, I raised the jack so that the frame horns bottomed out in the crossmember and that gave me enough clearance to 'pull' the axle tubes off the axle shafts. The photo below is the set-up I used to 'pull' the tubes from the shafts. The old axles are still attached because i need to get a larger snap-ring plier...tomorrow.
Yes, it can be done with the trans in the car...

Hey everyone! Quick question, would I run into any trouble if I ran a short axle swap, AND a 2" trans raise?
Thanks |

Quick question. To convert a '63 wide five to 4 lug with shortened axles, I would do all the above but change the backing plates, drums, and all other brakes parts? |

If you are using the bug transaxle then yes you will need to use your type 3 nose cone and hockey stick. But if you are only changing the axles then you will need all the pieces to the bug axles. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value.
